It Begins: CD-6 Ad Buys

If you were to judge the status of the CD-6 Republican primary by what's recently been aired on television, you'd think that race was heating up, with absentee mail ballots being delivered as we speak.

It's not, Secretary of State Mike Coffman has that race in the bag. However, it's still fun to watch the ads from both the Coffman and Armstrong camps.

Videos after the bump.

Skyler :: It Begins: CD-6 Ad Buys
"Proven Conservative"
Coffman for Congress

As ads go, they come worse than this one. Jared Polis could learn from the quality of Coffman's voice talent, and the background music, while cheesey, isn't distracting. The overview of Coffman's military service will play well to primary voters, though it may be of note that Steve Ward also served in Afghanistan and Iraq. The biggest downside would be the rather strange fake speech, accompanied with stock applause, of Coffman in front of the American flag graphic. Ad Grade: A-

"Career Businessman"
Armstrong for Congress

There's nothing exceptional about this ad. A few simple transitions which any owner of Final Cut could insert, accompanied with some very light, optimistic (rather than patriotic) background music. The big plus to Armstrong's ad is that he's providing the voiceover. It's a risky move, but Armstrong more or less makes it work. Once again, the candidate slams so-called "career politicians," which hasn't seemed to resonate with CD-6 Republicans to date. Wil, son of Senator Bill Armstrong, likes to use that snazzy "career politicians" line, while trumpeting endorsements from the likes of Marilyn Musgrave, Scott McInnis, Bill Owens, and John Suthers, all of whom have spent a career working in politics. The "high gas" prices theme is important to touch upon, but it doesn't help define Armstrong as a candidate or improve his name ID any, and in a race against Coffman, campaigning on specific issues won't be helpful. Ad Grade: C+

Based on these two ads, I'd be more compelled to cast my vote for Coffman. His ad is a lot cleaner, and more effectively outlines his record. Both are rhetoric rich, and were it not for the poor editing of Armstrong's piece, they'd probably be equally as effective. Fortunately, I don't live in CD-6, and I'm not a Republican, so I won't have to make that decision.

Think I'm wrong? Poll follows.

What Business?
What business is Coffman claiming he started? Just curious, because it is a great play against Armstrong.

Property Management Firm
He said in one of his speeches that it was a property management firm that he started with the money he saved up from his days in the Marine Corps and Army.  He said it was still around today.

Great play against Armstrong
Wil probably shit a brick when he saw Coffman go up with this ad. That's the constant theme Wil has tried to paint since he began his campaign. Coffman said so what, I've been in business and I've done all these other things as well.

Wil does seem hypocritical
His dad was a very good career politician. The people his dad got to endorse him were also pretty good career politicians. Because he has no political experience of his own and no other message, Wil is trying to differentiate himself. Unfortunately, for Wil he needed a better commercial than what they produced. He still comes across as the guy that would fire you the week before Christmas.

You can put lipstick on a pig but...
The root problem with Wil is there's nothing to sell there. Even his job experience seems to be handed to him by his dad. And mortgage broker is up there with oil executive, used car salesman and pornographer as jobs that you don't mention if you're running for office.

Must have two versions....
Coffman must have two versions of this ad. I saw a slightly different version this morning on channel 9. I think both are far more affective than Armstrong's. I did check on You Tube and sure enough he does have a second version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

After seeing these two ads
There is no way Mike Coffman loses this race. I bet the other campaigns are beginning to see the writing on the wall. They are probably more focused on updating their resumes than the campaign at this point.

Don't forget Steve Ward
After all, he's the only one in this race who gets the Thielen Bump (if you watch the Colbert Report you know what this is. (Ok, it's unlikely, but if he does win...)

This was a great post, I really love how you graded the ads-that is a great idea!  I hope you keep this up for the duration of the elections

Thanks!
A year and a half of muckraking for Gravel has taught me one thing in particular, what makes an effective ad. That said, most of ours were ineffective, but we were going for art in the bottom tier.

I'm surprised no one caught this....
The overview of Coffman's military service will play well to primary voters, though it may be of note that Steve Harvey also served in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Steve Harvey?  I think you meant Steve Ward.  Ted Harvey has no military experience at all.

Nobody is perfect and nobody needs to be.

Whoops.
Nobody is perfect, and nobody needs to be.

Fixed.
