Throwback Thursday: Mike Coffman and the Teabaggers

  • by: Colorado Pols

As we head into August of this 2014 election season, Rep. Mike Coffman remains one of the most vulnerable members of Congress in the entire nation, in a district considered a model for balanced representation–so much so that the CD-6 race has become a "petri dish" for understanding how politics in America today works.

But it wasn't always such a close business for Rep. Coffman, who was originally elected to Congress in a very different CD-6. Prior to redistricting in 2011, CD-6 was an ultra-safe conservative seat and the stomping ground of Rep. Tom Tancredo. This was the district that gave Tancredo latitude to become a national embarrassment to Republicans on the issue of immigration, happily re-electing him year after year now matter what kind of headlines he made. When Coffman ran for the seat in 2008, he went to great lengths in the primary to tell voters how he would use this "very Republican seat" to take "strong positions."

With that history explained, today's "Throwback Thursday" photo of Coffman, at a Tea Party rally on the west steps of the Colorado Capitol from that pre-redistricting glückliche Zeit, will make a lot more sense! Without that background, it's kind of difficult to square this picture with the Mike Coffman voters in today's CD-6 are supposed to be getting to know today:

It seems to us this could be…the word is not misused, we guess, because it's exactly what it looks like.

Suffice to say that it's one of many photos from this bygone era that could come back to haunt him. Shortly.

  1. Coffman's initial reason for opposing ACA was that it included benefits for "illegal" immigrants.  When that was exposed as untrue, he never recanted and instead found other reasons to oppose.  There were lots of Republican arguments against ACA, but the one Coffman chose to emphasize is revealing.

    1. "Blindfold" . . . is that some kind of west slope euphemism for "butt cheeks" ???

Coffman doesn't have to worry at all about offending hispanic voters, because his current district was purposely badly and unfairly gerrymandered by a liberal,
Democratic judge with an agenda . . .  (I have no idea what the logic of this argument is, but Moddy can probably explain it?)

  2. Just go ahead and say it Mikey — the cat's already out of the bag — there's a war against all pasty fleshed peoples like you and me.

(You'd think our GOPer trolls could have provided one useful service and have tipped us off eariler, but I guess AC's busy reading comic books, and Moddy's probably been searching the help wanteds again . . . )

    1. Great article!  It outlines precisely how the GOP can't help themselves when driving away non-white voters (and the author didn't even have space to cover similar problems the GOP has with women!)

  3. Didn't Mikey dabble briefly in birtherism a couple of years ago at an event in Elbert County?  (Back when Elbert and Douglas Counties were in his district.)  Made some crude comment about the type of American he thought our president was…..

  4. Who says we don't have publicly funded campaign financing?

I just got two campaign pieces from Mike Coffman paid for by you and me — one to my wife and one addressed to me.

Highlights from the one directed to my wife:

Coffman's votes to repeal workplace and environmental safeguards so that employers can really screw the middle and lower class (this was touted under "Jobs") to make bigger bonuses.

Coffman's votes to make sure banksters get hefty profits selling riskfree student loans (privatize profits, socialize losses)

Votes to support medical research (unless it involves stem cells, in which case, Mikey's message is "Die sucker!")

Highlights of the one addressed to me:

Coffman brags about his vote to repeal Obamacare, in particular the IPAB made up of "15 bureaucrats", you know highly qualified doctors dedicated to public service, rather than folks that have skin in the game, i.e. Incentive Comped Insurance executives who can really turn that board into a no-kidding "DEATH PANEL"!

He also bragged about his legislation to keep the government trough filled to the brim for all insurance companies that want to rip off the Medicare Advantage program.

That is one hard working government employee!

    1. If it is clearly campaign literature disguised as regular legislator-to-constituent communication, you can file a campaign finance complaint with the secretary of state. The El Paso County Assessor just got nailed for that, and will have to pay $14,000 in penalties.

Clues that it is campaign lit masquerading as constituent communication:

      • Talks excessively about the incumbent in glowing campaign-type adjectives: "strong leader" "stands up for ____", "fights Washington bureaucrats", etc.
      •  attacks opponent or other Democrats.
      • repeats information which constituents already know, which may form the excuse for the mailing, ie. justification for mailing is thin.
      • The mailing you got has a marked resemblance (same graphics, language, etc) to a legit campaign piece marked as "paid for by coffmanforcongress.com"
      • asks for your vote in November.*
      • asks for donations to campaign. *

*He's probably not stupid enough to blatantly commit those last 2 offenses, but then this is Mike Coffman we're discussing.

Anyone can file a campaign finance complaint. It's a free process.  If you feel that there are ethics violations, as well, you can also file with the Colorado Ethics Commission.

      1. Thanks MJ — I'll take a closer look at the verbiage to see if there are any blatant violations.  Having the context of the legislation he was touting gave me a leg up in the BS to reality translation I provided above.

The dog whistles in the mailers were hurting my ears.
