Coffman Can't Spin His Way Out Of Losing To Romanoff Again

Rep. Mike Coffman.
Rep. Mike Coffman.

FOX 31's Eli Stokols reports, time to break out the hip waders in the marquee CD-6 race:

Congressman Mike Coffman’s campaign is claiming momentum after winning the June fundraising period over Democratic challenger Andrew Romanoff in one of the most competitive House races of the 2014 cycle.

Coffman’s campaign brought in $405,000 between June 5 and June 30, more than Romanoff, who raised $373,000 in the latest reporting period…

The problem is, fundraising performance is generally measured by the quarter.

The press release from Coffman’s campaign didn’t mention that it brought in $742,000 during the year’s second quarter as a whole, which is $100,000 less than the $842,000 quarterly haul Romanoff’s campaign announced Monday. [Pols emphasis]

Mike Coffman's campaign spin notwithstanding, this Q2 of 2014 was the fourth straight quarter in which Democrat Andrew Romanoff has outraised one of the nation's most vulnerable incumbents. Romanoff is almost $400,000 ahead of Coffman now in terms of cash on hand–$2.67 million to $2.3 million. It makes sense, given that Coffman's lackluster fundraising is increasingly casting a shadow on his campaign, that they would try to find some way of spinning this result. In the one month of June, Coffman can plausibly say he barely beat Romanoff.

But as you can see, reporters aren't buying the spin. And when that happens, sometimes the spin becomes the story.

  1. If you look at Thursday June 19, I crushed him !  That's the whole picture too !  You don't need to look at anything else.  Trust me.

    1. To clarify, while Romanoff actually outraised Coffman $8,451 to $4,239 on June 19th, the crucial 2:13 p.m. to 3:19 p.m. time slot was a Coffman rout, crushing Romanoff $421 to $358.  This is the crucial sign that Coffman will win going away!

  2. 2012 was very close with the usual unexciting Dem candidate and a Dem electorate not fully awake to the fact that CD6 had changed enough to give Dems a chance. So, no particular extra enthusiasm from Dem voters and volunteers used to losing 2 to 1 as a matter of routine. This time it's different. A list candidate following an election Dems lost by the first close margin here ever and more widespread awareness of the change in the landscape.

Dem enthusiasm is on its way to going through the roof in CD6. The fund raising is a reflection of that.  Rs haven't been elected here all these years due to high ethusiasm so much as a matter of course in a safe district. But we'll need to watch out for a deluge of GOTP PAC money to save the seat unless polls get really bad for Coffman, in which case money will go elsewhere, but a big enough gap to trigger that is unlikely. Romanoff won't take any PAC money but that doesn't mean outside groups can't independently pour money into ads and make up the difference.  This could be the big one for CD6 long suffering Dems.

  3. Coffman should debate AR. That would seal the deal.  I wonder what Coffman will do when he is out of office?  He has never worked in the private sector. If his wife wins AG then I guess he could be her PA?

Coffman and Florida Governor Rick Scott must have taken the same training. Memorize your talking point

    • Coffman: I misspoke and I apologize (for questioning whether Obama was "American in his heart".
    • Rick Scott : I appreciate….(all the on -duty cops who were illegally ordered to attend Scott's campaign photo op)

    and then keep repeating it.

    1. Yeah but Coffman couldn't even remember to just endlessly repeat. He kept forgetting and apologizing for the apology, followed by apologizing for the apology for the apology, etc.  Too many flip flops to keep track of. Where he finally landed, nobody can say for sure. But I bet he must have seriously strained something.
