THURSDAY UPDATE: Round and round we go. We can confirm that Deidre Garcia was indeed offered the job of Beauprez's running mate, but declined.

UPDATE #2: Beauprez's campaign says it never offered Lt. Governor to Garcia, and that Repella was their first choice.

UPDATE: Looks like Beauprez's campaign did have a bit of trouble finding a running mate. Check out this Tweet from Lynn Bartels of the Denver Post:

Just reported by CBS4's Shaun Boyd., Douglas County Commissioner Jill Repella has been picked as Bob Beauprez's running mate.
While we don't know a ton about Repella, she does satisfy a couple of important demographic concerns for the Beauprez ticket. First off, Repella is a woman — which Beauprez clearly needed to balance the ticket and combat the narrative of Republican struggles with women's issues. Repella is from the Metro Denver area, which is vitally important to winning a statewide race in Colorado; as we pointed out in April, it has been 18 years since a non-incumbent politician from outside Metro Denver was elected to statewide office, so Beauprez needed a running mate with some kind of base of support in Metro Denver. We wouldn't have gone with a Douglas County elected official, since that's a county that Republicans should win anyway, but at least Repella isn't from a small rural county that would do nothing to help Beauprez's odds in November.
It wasn't going to be difficult for Beauprez to choose a better running mate than he did in 2006, when his disastrous choice of Mesa County Commissioner Janet "Bestiality" Rowland was among the final nails in the coffin of his campaign. But why on earth would Beauprez's campaign decide to make this announcement on the same afternoon as the U.S. World Cup game? The campaign clearly knew that the game was a problem in terms of generating interest and media coverage for their announcement, which is why they waited until the final whistle to make the news official. The news tonight and tomorrow will be dominated by coverage and reaction to the World Cup game, making what should otherwise be an easy earned media hit a wasted opportunity.
Beauprez already botched his campaign announcement this spring when he was stuck in Washington D.C. on the day he intended to file, and this was another avoidable mistake…unless Beauprez's campaign was having trouble finding a suitable running mate who would agree to join him in 2014. Either Beauprez's campaign needed until the last minute (today) to announce a Lt. Governor running mate because they couldn't find who they wanted…or nobody paid any attention to what was scheduled to happen elsewhere today (like, oh, the biggest soccer game in recent U.S. history).
Either way, Beauprez's handling of choosing a running mate ended up being much more complicated than it needed to be. This matters, like it or not, because one of Beauprez's biggest challenges will be proving to supporters and potential supporters that his campaign will be appreciably better than his historically-awful 2006 bid for Governor. So far, not so good.

Was Janet Rowland unavailable for another go? And what about those pesky rumors about Brophy getting the nod?
Rowland has a real job now.
Good hair is the only reason Steve King got elected to anything. Well, that and an R after his name in Mesa County.
The Both Ways Bob/Repel-ya rticket. How mnemonic!
In other news, a republican pollster rasmussen that got it so wrong in 2012 is now claiming Beauprez is tied with Hickenlooper. hahaha What a joke
One more time. It's not the same Rasmussen as in 2012. Under new management, so to speak. Just as inaccurate but with this incarnation most days it has Obama's approval much higher than other polls. It's the only poll I've seen in the last couple of months that has had his approval moving into the positive range several times. Check out the major polls at Real Clear Politics for a few weeks and you'll see.
The polling is pretty close right now but that will change in plenty of time for Hick to beat back BWB. There's too much great material to use against him and he's sure to keep stepping in it long after Hick stops.
Both Ways Bob and Second Choice Jill
To BWB's credit . . .
. . . he was able to find a second fiddle who's apparently said a lot less stupid crap than him.
That sounds like a pretty easy thing to do.
Ummm . . . yeah, maybe, should be. But, we're talking BWB here — about the only thing he usually gets "easy" is a total botch up.
Well that'll solve those problems the Republicans have with women.
Well, she is cuter that Joe Garcia.
Easy on the eyes, to be sure…
That was McCain;s strategy in selecting Palin. All the men would want her, all the women would want to be her…….
Palin became a conservative media personality. Perhaps Ms. Repella will have a similar future.
will the fickled finger of fate strike twice? stay tuned…….
…and then she opened her mouth and spoke…
Agreed, but the photo is a dated studio shot … actually, she's 50 according to a search engine … usa-people-search.com
Yeah, but so is Brophy . . .
Speak for yourself. Joe Garcia looks pretty good to me.
didn't Hick once refer to Garcia as a porn start? (jokingly of course….I'm sure he promptly apologized)
But then did he have to apologize to porn stars for the apology?
Actually, I think Beauprez's biggest problem is that she'll come off a lot smarter than him. She might even be more qualified than BWB. Just my gut after seeing a few references on the web about her background and experience in Dougco
Yeah, but so is Brophy . . .
To be fair, where are they going to find anybody who doesn't come off smarter? He'd have to run with a fence post.
That ticket would get more votes than many would predict.
Too true!
I hear Steve King might be available soon if anyone needs a fence post.
What is a masters degree in Professional Management? I don't mean to be snarky. I just wonder what her credentials are? Is it the equivelant of an MBA? Also, why aren't people bringing up her 3 years on the Douglas County School Board? I like a lot of what they are doing (rejecting Common Core and PARCC testing, recognizing learning differences) but am concerned about the anti-union anti-teacher direction this country is taking and the Douglas School Board is leading that change.
I was leaning towards Beauprez until I saw this pick.
She actually claims a degree as a Master of Professional Studies, Organizational Leadership, and Executive Leadership– what now appears to be called a Master's in Leadership and Organizations at DU. It looks like one of those practical master's degrees that's light on theory and heavy on practice for working folks checking the master's box. Less theory than an MBA and probably less breadth, but a legit degree nonetheless.
It sounds more impressive than a B.A. in phys ed like someone else on the ticket has…….
It would have been better if BWB had Deidra Garcia to duel with Hick's Joe Garcia in debate for light gov.
OK so Beauprez has a thing for blondes who are younger than him. What else does this pick say besides "dirty old man?"
It says he thinks like John McCain. He thinks women are stupid enough to vote for him because he picked a female running mate. Even though a major point in her responses to one of her TV interviews was that she doesn't want this to be about her gender…
Do you suppose she is that naive?
Now that the players are all in place, I hope we get to see Hick vs. BWB in a debate, and Joe Garcia vs. Jill Repella
I wonder if she had a chat with Bob about this…?
She obviously misspoke. The correction from the BWB campaign will probably say something like:
Talk about the #2 on the ticket going off message!
The BWB campaign started with their last choice and were just working up the courage to, you know, ask their first choice to the prom:
I don't know why there's any surprise. Of course Both Ways Bob would have two first choices for running mate!
+10 PC!
I really hate that most of these comments focus on Repella's appearance. However, I guess I will join in the cattiness:
This is how she looked in 2011. Still an attractive woman – I have no idea about her politics, but the three consecutive terms on DougCo School Board are a pretty good clue.
I was simply pointing out Beauprez' track record of selecting younger, blonde running mates. First Janet Rowlane, now Jill ("Emily") Repella. Never mind.
Rowland.
I wish you;d not. Nor any of the others here. Her vagina isn't running for office, and I don't see this nonsense in the male politician threads (except maybe Maketa's, but he's advertising the goods).
Beauprez' decision process is fair game for discussion.
So is the thinking that led to Palin for VP. These are considerations, like it or not. In Palin's case the whole point was the vagina in the ridiculously off base belief that HRC fans would come over to support a woman, never mind that woman's policy positions were all the polar opposite of HRC's and her supporters'. They think women are stupid and men are ruled by their dicks. I'm guessing they're projecting.
I think we need to ask her does she agree with Crazy Old Bob's positions, or Obtuse New Bob's positions, and why?
Personal attractiveness is a quality that makes people more electable; we all understand that, even if we disapprove of it.
Barack Obama had sex appeal going for him. Mark Udall does; so do Cory Gardner and Paul Ryan, although the politics of the latter two are abhorrent to me. Balding male candidates are less electable than candidates with "good hair". Female candidates should conform to societal standards of beauty. It's a weird, unconscious assessment that voters make, and it does NOT contribute to good governance.
Bob Beauprez definitely lacks any sex appeal whatsoever, and so he attempted to add some to his ticket, which was maybe a smart move on his part.
We haven't figured out how sex appeal and attractiveness work for female candidates. Too sexy? Too beautiful? Does that make them less credible? Not authoritative enough? Will Hillary need to get a facelift before running, while McCain did not?
That acknowledged, I would like to see more discussion of this candidate's policies and history – this is a politics blog, not a beauty blog.
Policy? Personal history?
glwt.
To each his own but I don't find Gardner or Ryan even vaguely attractive. They both have those big crazy rightie eyes that give me the creeps. Udall, on the other hand, looks like the guy from Hollywood central casting for the role of western Senator, Governor, and/or Presidential candidate.
Me, too. I searched der google for a while and I couldn't find much that she has said that we can actually discuss, beyond the quote I posted above. Her announcement interview was just pablum, mostly.
Generally pols are judged for appearance on an entirely different scale than Hollywood stars. The bar is a good deal lower. I wouldn't worry too much about any of them being too beautiful to vote for.
There's this – the Douglas County Library had an outspoken director, Jamie Larue, who was an ACLU member and plaintiff in the case against the privatization of Douglas County Schools under the leadership of the Dougco School Board.
Repella (sorry, every time I write that name I think of a Disney villainess, like Cruella) and the other Commissioners took away the traditional power of the library to appoint its own officers, and said that from now on, directors will be appointed by "elected officials," i.e., Commissioners.
Apparently, the Commissioners, including Ms. Repella, were successful in their bid to take over those library appointments, thus striking a blow for censorship, which was, incidentally, against long-standing precedent, This is per an op ed by Hank Lacey in the Denver Post.
And Repella also took the lead in appealing Judge Hyatt's "Democrat Redistricting" (sic). The Douglas County GOP fought pretty hard to keep District 6 as a safe GOP district. Repella was active in that fight, also in "Clear the Bench Colorado". I think she wrote this post, which is also attributed to "CTBC Director".
Clear the Bench Colorado is an organization which works to get "activist" (read liberal or moderate) judges out of office. This link goes to a long rant about how Judge Krieger's ruling tossing the sheriff's lawsuit against the gun laws was unfair, wrongheaded, bla bla.
So OK. Repella's been a rising Republican star for years and years, getting elected to minor offices, carrying water for censorship of libraries ,vouchers in the schools, against redistricting that disadvantaged some Republicans, etc.
Obviously a smart and accomplished lady – (although it looks as though I would totally disagree with her politics) – so Davie may be right in that Beauprez should be careful that she doesn't outshine him in the intellectual competence department.
Judging from the "47%" remarks by BWB now being circulated here, I think that is a very real possibility. On the other hand, if she is willing to run as his Lt. Governor, one might question her intellectual acumen.
Taking the Lt. Gov slot is pretty low risk politically. It's a good place for an ambitious up-and-comer to raise their name recognition. Even if the top of the ticket is a buffoon like BWB, if she shines in comparison (not hard to do at this stage), and isn't a liability to the ticket due to unvetted baggage, then in GOP circles, she'll have paid her dues and will be added to the rotation in the next election cycle.
Yup. Pretty sure that's her thinking. Or, she's angling for the "right wing media star" circuit.
You probably saw that article (I can't find it in my trash, unfortunately) in either Slate or WaPo about GOP losers failing upwards into lucrative careers, as you say, on the right wing media circuit — cushy think tanks, radio shows, forming PACs, etc. to raise money for themselves and influence future campaigns…
The "Half-Guv" really showed the way to win power and riches is to lose your elected office.
Let's just compromise on Reptilla.
That was supposed to be a reply to MJ. By the way, when I see her name, I think of Emily Litella.
We all have our own cultural icons. But Reptilla works for me. Sneaky, silent, and poisonous.
