Bruce Flap Turns Even Uglier

by: Colorado Pols

As the Grand Junction Sentinel reports:

A Western Slope state lawmaker has requested the Colorado State Patrol provide her with additional protection because of the number of threats sent to her this week by anti-illegal immigration advocates.

Rep. Kathleen Curry, D-Gunnison, said after she gaveled down Rep. Doug Bruce, R-Colorado Springs, for calling Mexican immigrants "illiterate peasants" during a Monday debate, she was bombarded with threatening messages via e-mail and telephone.

"The hate mail is off the charts, and there's issues with people in terms of this response," Curry said. "It has really bothered me."

She said hundreds of threatening, acerbic messages have clogged her cell phone's voicemail and her e-mail inbox.

"We attempted to restore decorum to the (House) chamber," Curry said. "There are people out there that felt that was so inappropriate, they thought it was OK to threaten (a lawmaker)."

Curry said after she gaveled down Bruce and forbade him from speaking at the microphone, she remarked, "How dare you!" in reaction to Bruce's subsequent comments.

As a result of the threats, Curry said she also has asked the State Patrol to keep tabs on her family's Gunnison ranch...

... hundreds of threatening, acerbic messages have clogged her cell phone's voicemail and her e-mail inbox.

Leads me to suspect that there was a coordinated effort.

Chuck Baker has done this in the past.

Who rouses the rabble on Colorado Springs talk radio today ?
.

Read the comments section
of just about any paper and you'll see how rabid the radicals are on the right. I'm sure Peter Boyles has nothing to do with this...

I don't believe it
A politically correct lefty tries to shut down criticism of a terrible bill and now she's getting flack from people with common sense, including the Rocky's editorial page.

The real outrage isn't what Bruce said but that some nut played the politically correctness card on him. Very Marxist of her.

Care to explain what a guest worker program
has to do with illegal immigration?

Please don't confuse the well with a soap box.

please make the connection for me ASs
between Rep. Curry chairing the debate and Marxism...  otherwise I would have to conclude that you are merely blowing chunks our your bung, again

Good spin, Skeptic.
But if you listened to the actual debate, which you can still do on the Legislature's web site, shutting down criticism of the bill didn't have a damned thing to do with it.

Bruce was warned at least twice to keep his rhetoric to the bill, which is the House rule.

If he was simply criticizing the bill, he wouldn't have been gaveled down.

The problem was, he was improvising.

The House has rules.  You can find them here.

Keeping the debate to the bill itself is one of the rules.  The rules are the same for everyone.

Bruce deserved the gavel.

There's a big difference between disagreement...
...and threatening emails and phone calls. Functioning democracy requires that we do not threaten those we disagree with. The cretians you are supporting do not pass this basic test.

I guarantee you Bruce is behind this
His loyal minions (robots) will do whatever he commands them to do.  Fortunately, their numbers are decreasing.

Email her now!
When crap like this happens a positive email is a tremendous emotional help. Everyone here should email here something positive. kathleen.curry.house@state.co.us

Thanks for the suggestion.

She's done a great job--not only for her own constituents in the Gunnison area, but for the entire Western Slope.

I apologized..
...for those like me who think we have an illegal immigration problem.

I also took the time to examine the phrase and its meaning, as I've done here.

And apologized again.

Sent as well
Too often our elected officials only hear from one side. It's important for them to know that many of us support what they are doing and the actions they are taking.

[ Parent ]
Thanks for thinking of this, Dave.
My message is sent.

[ Parent ]
Done and done.
Yes, thank you for passing this along. What a spectacular idea.

[ Parent ]
Thanks!
She'll really appreciate these messages. Its been a tough week for her, and it meant a lot to get some encouragement yesterday. She does such a wonderful job, and its been hard to read the terrible stuff thats been written. So thank you to everyone that wrote something positive and thank you David for suggesting this.

Please tell her to keep doing a great job
Is she a mom? If so she understands the idea of doing a great job and only hearing complaints. But she is greatly appreciated even if we do mostly take her for granted.

thank you again.

Excellent Idea!
Please count this Colorado Springs Republican as one who has sent her a Thank You note.

It just goes to show...
that when you turn from logic, reason and actually thought about an issue to raw emotions and feelings, you are no longer able to have public discourse about the subject.

I read an updated version of the story that had comments from Bruce on the situation.
Naturally he said the threats were wrong, but I can't help but feel he's being somewhat disingenuous. What intrigued me more, though, is that he claimed that 95% of the emails he has been getting have been positive. Again, I have a hard time believing that's true (though I would guess the nuts are somewhat more outspoken). In any case, I did my part in trying to decrease the percentage by sending him an email. Nothing threatening, of course. Actually, now that I think about it, I did thank him for helping to ensure a Democratic majority for years to come. Maybe he counts that as positive.

Give me a break!
Nobody is going to hurt Curry simply because she gaveled Doug Bruce down. I really can't stand meglomaniacal politicians who publicize their martyr complex in the press and expect sympathy from the public.  Most people see right through this ploy.  Maybe Kathleen should resign her legislative position and go get a job in the real world rather than cost the taxpayers a bunch of money in State Patrol personnel.

Yeah, people who make threats never follow through.
NOT!

[ Parent ]
And it's scary
My mom gets this at times and what really worries her is what if some crazy goes after not her, but someone else in the family. It's horrible.

This is an open wound on the body politic and is so very wrong.
