Schaffer - getting closer to Abramoff

by: DavidThi808

Sun Apr 13, 2008 at 23:57:48 PM MDT

johne at SquareState has a new diary up that, I think, truly ends Bob Schaffer's Senate campaign.

It includes documentation of a one hour meeting between staffers of Jack Abramoff and Schaffer's staff. If this is not refuted it is a pretty clear argument that Schaffer knew Abramoff.

It also has a horribly heartbreaking memo about a 15 year old girl forced to perform in a nightly sex show for ten months. This is going to make people recoil at the thought of Schaffer.

Again please go here for the whole piece. The documents are killer. With each day we see Schaffer being brought closer and closer to Abramoff

How bad are things for Bob? A Technorati search shows no blogs defending him. None. Control of the Senate could come down to this seat and the right-wing blogosphere is the dog that didn't bark in their silence.

And for those that think Bob Schaffer can still win click here.

While I agree that the article is damning...
and though I'm no big fan of Schaffer, does a re-direct to Square State merit a front page post?

Jus' wondering. Again, the subject material is fine by me, but couldn't you have also taken nuggets from the original square state post?

Same as if the Denver Post had broken this
I would have put a re-direct to them with some info here.

And that's the right thing to do, David
They did the work, they deserve the traffic.  I don't think it's too much to ask Skyler or anyone else to click on a link.

Today, you're either going to get better or you're going to get worse, but you're never going to be the same.  Which one will it be?  --Joseph V. Paterno

Absolutely agree.
If Skyler would bother to let his fingers do the walking, I think he'd see why the evidence linked is so damning and is somewhat difficult to post a partial reprint of her.

It's much better viewing it in all of its damning glory.

Yeah, but...FORCED ABORTIONS
This controversy has never been an argument about whether Sweatshop Schaffer met Jack Abramoff. That was a straw man Dick Wadhams rolled out as part of his damage control.

The controversy is about a sitting congressman who took a lobbyist-sponsored trip to an American territory where labor abuses and forced abortions were notorious, concluded there was nothing serious, met the lobbyist's clients, went parasailing, and then came back to Washington and attacked people who were trying to reform this system on behalf of Tom DeLay and his lobbyist crony, Jack Abramoff.

Not only that, several years later the now former congressman actually holds up the DeLay/Abramoff sweatshop system as an economic model for the entire United States.

Wadhams can't reasonably complain that "guilt by association" is being committed against Sweatshop Schaffer, because Schaffer himself was part of the sweatshop scandal.

Both are bad
but I agree Schaffer's hypocrisy is worse.

Very good summary

"There are a lot of reasons not to elect me." Mitt Romney in a moment of clarity

"I'm Mitt Romney and yes, Wolf, that's also my first name," Willard Mitt Romney demonstrating 'policy flexibility.'

Do you think Patrick Davis will keep supporting Bob?
"Pro-life" is the top theme for the Schaffer front group "Common Sense Issues" that ran an ad campaign for Bob late last year.

Can he really claim to be pro-life when he so enthusiastically and repeatedly supported Ben Fitial, the former VP of a sweatshop company and took thousands in contributions from sweatshop owners, knowing full well that forced abortions were a well-documented occurrence in the very sweatshops owned by the guy he took money from and managed by the guy Schaffer endorsed twice?

As for US Term Limits, the one virtue of term limits is that it allows automatic retirement for politicians like Bob Schaffer. They should be using Bob Schaffer as the poster child for why we need term limits, not propping him up. They aren't helping their own cause.

Non impediti ratione cogitationis.

BTW, I "adduced" this all by myself, you total fucking assclown.

further more
term limits means a lowly congressman like Schaffer wasn't important enough for Abramoff to meet with personally it seems.  The association between Fitial and Schaffer actually appears worse than any connection between Abramoff and Schaffer.  Your point is well made.

he may no longer be strictly pro-life......but he's consistently anti-choice

More questions for Mr. Schaffer:
Since Mr. Schaffer now admits that he found problems at one factory, he needs to answer these specific quesitons:

1.  What specific problems did he find at that factory?

2.  Was it slave labor?

3.  Was it prostitution?

4.  Was it forced abortions?

5.  Was it preventing laborers from practicing their religion?

If not these, then what were the problems he discovered?  And since he admits there were problems, at one factory, why didn't he bring those to the Resource Committee's attention at the hearing since, he admits, he was aware of them.  Why did he attempt to completely discredit the witnesses before the Resource Committee by accussing them of being paid by the U.S. government (a tactic to divert attention away from the committee's inquiry into labor pratcies in the Marianas)?  Why didn't he just distinguish the one factory he found impermissable labor practices at from the others?

He needs to answers these questions because they will inform Colorado voters about whether Mr. Schaffer is honest, whether he turns his head in the face of inhuman practices, or whther he was taken in by Abramoff's lobbying effort.  Colorado voters have the right to know the answers.

Bob Schaffer's complete answers to each of these questions
Q:  What specific problems did he find at that factory?

A: I never met Jack Abramoff

Q.  Was it slave labor?

A: I never met Jack Abramoff

Q.  Was it prostitution?

A: I never met Jack Abramoff

Q.  Was it forced abortions?

A: I never met Jack Abramoff

Q.  Was it preventing laborers from practicing their religion?

A: I never met Jack Abramoff

Well these answers make it clear
Bob Schaffer clearly never had sex with Jack Abramoff :)

It depends what the definition of "is" is
somebody was certainly getting screwed.  Specificly the people of the CNMI.

[ Parent ]
Now that's actually funny, David!

Well he surely knew about the
forced abortion issue by the time he recently pointed to the Mariana set up as a model for an American guest worker program.

In any case, he is either a corrupt hypocrite and liar or simply too stupid to be serving as an elected official if he really believed this was a wonderful program full of happy, well treated workers.

Would anybody trust this man to bring back any useful information from any fact finding trip he might take as Senator?  Does anyone believe he was really concerned about anything to do with "family values" or even just common human decency, while he was on this alleged fact finding (or was it more like fact ignoring?) mission?

If the GOP has any integrity, they will demand he  withdraw from the race now.
