Schaffer/Abramoff: Drip, Drip, Drip

by: Colorado Pols

Fri Apr 11, 2008 at 07:40:20 AM MDT

The Denver Post continues its damaging examination of the relationship between Senate candidate Bob Schaffer and jailed ex-lobbyist Jack Abramoff this morning:

At two key moments in the political life of Benigno Fitial - governor of the Northern Mariana Islands and a powerful former ally of now-jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff - then-Congressman Bob Schaffer was among several Republican U.S lawmakers who stepped in to lend their support, according to a copy of advertisements posted on a national blog and another obtained by The Denver Post.

The first was in 1999, when Fitial, who supported the islands' garment industry, was preparing an underdog run for House speaker of the Commonwealth Legislature. The second came two years later, when Fitial was running for governor of the islands.

The two instances, in which Schaffer endorsed Fitial in ads in island newspapers, show that Schaffer has had close and enduring ties with key politicians on the American protectorate, extending relationships he developed while on a fact-finding mission there in August 1999. They also show that Schaffer was part of a concerted and public campaign by Republicans on the House Committee on Natural Resources to boost Fitial's public career when he became key to extending a multimillion-dollar lobbying contract for Abramoff from the island's government.

Schaffer's ties to the Northern Mariana Islands and Abramoff have been the subject of new scrutiny as he campaigns for Colorado's open U.S. Senate seat.

Schaffer campaign manager Dick Wadhams declined Thursday to discuss his candidate's role in island politics. "The Denver Post continues its character assassination of Bob Schaffer," he said...

Today's story details the history of Schaffer's close relationship with Benigno Fitial, who in turn was key to efforts to maintain the Mariana Islands' lobbying contract with Abramoff's firm. Schaffer repeatedly endorsed Fitial for territorial governor in campaign ads, and Fitial was the strongest supporter of Abramoff's costly representation of the territory in Congress.

The Post concludes (for today):

Three years later, Fitial, who by then was governor, gave $2,000 to Schaffer's primary Senate campaign.

The only other political contributions Fitial made that year were to George Bush and the National Republican Senatorial Committee. [Pols emphasis]

The islands slipped into Colorado's senate campaign when Schaffer cited its guest-worker program as a "model" lawmakers could use as they overhaul the U.S. system.

That statement forced him to explain his support for the criticized program. It also drew attention to his 1999 trip to the island as part of what Abramoff later boasted was a successful lobbying effort to quash labor reforms.

Our view: the more that comes out on this scandal, the worse Schaffer looks, and lasting damage to his Senate prospects is very likely. Meanwhile, we hear campaign manager Dick Wadhams has responded to all press inquiries on Schaffer/Abramoff--from the Denver Post and elsewhere--with a seething belligerence that reporters find most unbecoming. You'll recall that Wadhams used a similar tactic attempting to defend Sen. George Allen during the "Macaca" fiasco, which had pretty much the opposite effect on the media from his intent: foul-mouthed denunciations of any inquiry only redoubled their scrutiny.

Is Wadhams making the same fatal mistakes again? Or is he just going crazy? Check out this quote from The Associated Press:

"We do look forward to when Boulder liberal Udall has Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to Colorado for Boulder liberal Udall to defend Sen. Reid's involvement with Abramoff," he said.

Um...yeah, okay.

Wadhams can't control his rage. Get this:

Wadhams called the story "a classic hit piece" and pointed to a Democrat with ties to Abramoff.

"We do look forward to when Boulder liberal Udall has Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to Colorado for Boulder liberal Udall to defend Sen. Reid's involvement with Abramoff," he said.

He's not coherent. He can't even cough up a sentence in English he's so mad.

And based on everything I know about Colorado, America, and the Constitution, I'm pretty sure Bob Schaffer isn't running against Harry Reid, so Reid's not really eligible to be the subject of a witty comeback.

Now David...
He does live in Boulder County.

Approximately 17 minutes from downtown Boulder, which is further than my house to downtown Colorado Springs. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=...

And his largest constituency is the Republic of Boulder.

SCHAFFER, for the record, does not live in El Paso County. In fact, he's a couple of counties away.

No GrOPer
He lives in ElDo Springs. Regardless of where Moderate Mark lives, Sweatshop Schaffer's encouragement of slave labor, forced abortions, and sex trade, is unacceptable.

And DickWads response is very telling. The old man is past his prime, and is losing his mind with flashbacks of Macca only this time his candidate is saying "Mariana's."

Sounds like it. Claiming "character assassination" won't make the Post's findings untrue.

Schaffer's close ties are killing him
The Post has done an excellent job following up on this story.  Schaffer's support of Fital and Fital's very selective donations including Schaffer in return are tying this issue to the campaign like the lead weight that it is.

Wadhams better get ready for his second defeat in a row, because this is going to hurt for a long time.

"Kill the messenger!"
Wadhams strategy of going after the Post is ordinarily enough red meat for the base, even in a bad situation, but can it possibly be enough here? I don't see what other moves Wadhams can make: Sweatshop Schaffer's ties to the disgusting situation on CNMI are personal, long-standing, and deep.

Not to mention, ideologically Sweatshop just happens to think that Benigno Fitial is a trailblazer in immigration and labor policy.

"It is hard enough to remember my opinions, without also remembering my reasons for them!" - Nietzsche

Normally, I would agree with you but
this time going after the messenger won't be enough for the social/religious conservatives since Schaffer was obviously looking the other way while forced abortions were performed.

[ Parent ]
Then we agree
Sweatshop has backed Wadhams into a corner. The Harry Reid slam just shows how badly the damage control is going. Colorado isn't Utah, after all.

The "Bu-bu-buh...he did it too!" tactic is just an admission that Sweatshop Schaffer is chest deep in very bad Abramoff dealings.

If it isn't clear after all these years
that the supposedly "family values" Republicans in congress never actually DO anything except make promises to the religious right at election time, it certainly ought to be.

Tax breaks for the tiny percentage of mega-wealthy and destruction of all inconvenient regulatory controls to protect the safety and well being of Americans has always been their top priority.  Abortion, gay marriage, supporting troops and vets, etc. are just the buttons they push to get elected.

Anyone who realizes that the tooth fairy and the Easter bunny don't actually exist ought to realize that a belief in a Schaffer who hasn't known all about the forced abortion issue for years falls in the same category.

[ Parent ]
It's like Wadhams is trying to lose
There are much better ways to handle this (and no I'm not going to list any). It may be that Wadhams is a one trick pony in his approach and that approach no longer works.

Oh well, an easy Udall win is good for the country so lets take these gifts. Maybe God is a Democrat...

Keep in mind that Wadhams isn't all that original
His biggest success story was getting the "Potted Plant" elected not once but twice by recycling Gene Nichols' '96 accusation that Tom Strickland was a millionaire-lawyer-lobbyist.

[ Parent ]
It didn't hurt that...
Strickland was a millionaire-lawyer-lobbyist, and that Strickland never came up with a compelling reason to vote for him.

Good point. Nichols and Wadhams both hurled that most vicious type of rumor of all at Tom Strickland.....a rumor that's true!

[ Parent ]
How about taking the high road?
Wadhams' pathetically weak initial response, followed by his incoherent ranting, is not impressive.

Wadhams should have had Schaffer get out there front and center, right away, to point out how tiny the contributions he got were, and to try as much as he could to spin things away from Abramoff and explain away the slavery/forced abortion/etc. Now it's too late.

Bad tidings for the Schaffer campaign
It looks like Schaffer may be one of TPMMuckraker's new BFFs.  TPMMuckraker is largely credited for bringing the Attorney firing scandal to the front pages of national news...  They've now written three stories on Schaffer and his ties to CNMI (plus the "Veracifier" video from yesterday and a blog post on the main TPM website by Josh Micah Marshall) - this is not going well for Dick and Bob.

"I have come to the conclusion that the making of laws is like the making of sausages-the less you know about the process the more you respect the result."  -- Anonymous IL State Rep. circa 1878

Here are more statements from Mr. Schaffer's campaign website
the last time he ran for Congress in 2000:

"Republicans replace their own leaders for moral failure.  Democrats promote theirs in such cases."

Going to the Marianas in 1999 and then returning to Colorado and telling us everything is alright in the Saipan sweatshops, even though it was already public knowledge that forced abortions and slave labor conditions existed, is a moral failure of the first rank.  And now Mr. Schaffer wants us to "promote" him to the U.S. Senate.

On the same website, Mr. Schaffer said:  "Republicans judge people on the content of their character."  Apparently for Mr. Schaffer, sweatshop owners who require their employees to work in slave like conditions, require and perform forced abortions, and forbid the practice of the Christian religion are good upstanding citizens.

On the same website, Mr. Schaffer said:  "Republicans promote liberty."  But he certainly didn't in the Marianas.  By l;ooking the other way, he promoted control over individual human beings that no one, liberal or conservative, Republican or Democrat, will ever tolerate in the United States.  He should hang his head in shame.

On the same website, Mr. Schaffer said:  "Republicans embrace the motto 'In God We Trust,'" but not when it comes to the Marianas.  No, not there, there it is ok to deny people the right to practice their Christian religion freely.

On the same website, Mr. Schaffer said:  "Republicans honor the Right to Pursue Happiness."  But not when it comes to the Marianas.  No, in that case, there is an exception even though the Marianas are a U.S. Territory.  On Saipan, it is ok to deny individuals the right to pursue happiness and force them into slave like conditions that for women include forced abortions and deny them the right to marry.  By looking the other way, his conduct was beneath honor and dignity.

Mr. Schaffer is very fond of ending his speeches by quoting from memory Patrick Henry's speech that concludes with "Give me liberty or give me death."  It is now obvious, he doesn't include the Saipan sweatshop workers within the meaning Mr. Henry's famous speech when someone pays for your parasailing and a junket to a tropical beach.

He is also fond of making patriotic speeches about our brave soldiers overseas and the sacrifice made by the founding fathers.  He needs to review the history of the sacrifice the men and women of the United Sates Marine Corps, the United States Army and the United States Navy made in World War II to free the Marianas Islands, including a direct bloody assault on Saipan in 1944.  Those brave veterans did not make their sacrifices in support of slave labor conditions, forced abortions and the denial of religious freedom.  Just the opposite.

Mr. Schaffer's ties to Abramoff, the Family Values Council and the sweatshop operators and supporters on Saipan is simply disgraceful.  Looking the other way, while simultaneously proclaiming himself to be for the highest moral values (e.g. against all abortions), is more than hypocritical; it indicates a complete lack of a moral compass.  It shows he is driven by pure expediency which is the antithesis of morality.

Awesome post. Make it an editorial letter!

I think...
it is safe to say that Dick Wadhams is a fantastic campaign manager when he has a candidate that is not seriously challenged.  He tends to lose it though when under pressure.  He has been handed a chance to redeem his handling of Allen's Maccaca moment and he's blowing it.

The best thing to do to put this to rest, (if it can be put to rest), is to bring the candidate out to a press conference--and answer as honestly as possible.  Say that although he didn't personally see any abuses, he now understands that there were, in fact, abuses going on and that if elected he will do his best to ensure that they don't happen in any American protectorate again.  He could try to separate the employment practices (state that he finds them abhorrent), from the guest worker program.  If he does this, the issue is dead by the time November rolls around (an no one really expects Schaffer to be an employee advocate if he should find his way back to Washington anyway).  By avoiding the press, Schaffer is keeping the story alive.

The whole, "yeah but look at my opponent's friend" defense is just stupid.  Reminds me of "I know you are but what am I" game played in pre-school.

"But when I see a 9-11 victim family on television, or whatever, I'm just like, 'Oh, shut up!' I'm so sick of them because they're always complaining."  Glenn Beck

That would be terrific...
...because Schaffer would be publicly admitting his ignorance about a topic that has been widely covered in the nation's media since his trip and debated on the floor of the U.S. Senate, to which he wants to be elected.

At the same news conference, Schaffer could discuss why the Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support just passed legislation to reform the Northern Marianas immigration regulations because of all the widely documented problems resulting from this "model" guest worker setup. And Schaffer can explain why the Senate sponsor said, "Very few people would defend the status quo in the CNMI, which has done such damage to workers and their families over the years."

Yep, if that news conference was on pay-per-view I'd whip out the credit card.

[ Parent ]
In general, the voting public...
will tolerate ignorance over corruption and being downright evil (protecting companies that engage in slavery and forced abortion, I think most of us would agree, is evil).

The issues in the Northern Marianas may have been covered somewhat, but it is not at the forefront of most American's minds.  That is why if this is to remain an issue, dems and our allies are going to have to do some educating to keep it alive.  The fact that it has not been well covered is exactly why Schaffer has an opportunity to put the fire out before it consumes his campaign.

Don't get me wrong, I hope his campaign continues to flounder and mishandle this whole issue.

You're right Arvadonian: Wadhams is failing the test
The test isn't how you run a campaign when it's sailing along smoothly; the test is instead how you do when your guy has a crisis. I was really impressed with how Obama and even more his campaign managers handled the Rev. Jeremiah Wright issue: it was and remains a situation with no easy, glib response available for Obama. He handled it as best he could.

Schaffer and Wadhams, like Obama with Wright, don't have any easy answers on this one, or easy way back to smooth sailing. But they seem to be doing everything totally wrong. This is Allen/Macaca all over again, it seems.

Defend the 1st, 10th, 14th and 17th Amendments - and Social Security! Vote Democratic!

[ Parent ]
Add to that
Obama did not in an interview say that he tried to live by the words of Rev Wright. This is Schaffer choosing to shoot himself in the foot.

You would think Wadhams went over the major talking points before the interview. Schaffer chose to bring this up and talk about it at some length.

So very bad prep work and that reflects on Wadhams.

Tom Tancredo Interview

[ Parent ]
What are you smoking?
Can anyone say John Thune? Wadhams is a brilliant manager.

[ Parent ]
He's smart
He was smart enough to convince the state party to pay him $160K, to only ditch them, and take another $100K pay check from Sweatshop Schaffer.

Yet he'll prove once again to be worthless when November rolls around.

"Suddenly, it may be cool to be American again" - William J. Kole

[ Parent ]
Credit and Blame
If he takes credit for Thune, he takes blame for Allen.  At best, a wash. (I would argue that getting a Republican congressman elected to the Senate in a Republican state is less of an accomplishment than Mecaca was a disaster.) In Colorado, he has a very good record, but it appears that his record is going to take a significant hit.

[ Parent ]
I disagree
If a candidate goes down in flames because he was caught snorting coccaine off of a hooker's belly, that's the campaign manager's fault?

Allen makes a comment, and that's Wadham's fault?  What was he supposed to do?  Magically know that Allen was going to say something and tackle him before he could say it?

If Allen lost because money wasn't spent wisely, or because they never got around to setting up a GOTV drive, then I could agree with your point.  But Allen lost because of Allen's comments.  There wasn't anything that anyone could have done about that.

Thune on the other hand, ran for the Senate in 2002 and lost.  Wadhams ran the campaign in 2004 and he won.  Wadhams shouldn't get all of the credit (Thune never shot himself in the foot), but a different manager made a difference.

[ Parent ]
A manager...
should have had Allen get in front of a camera and apologize for his error in judgement.  It would have been the end of the story.  Instead, he weaseled and said he had never heard the word which prompted the media to do some investigating into the origins of the word and Allen's seeming love of the Confederacy.  Voters will forgive lapses in judgement--but they don't like being lied to.

Allen using the word wasn't Wadham's fault...his inability to manage the situation was his fault (unless, of course he gave advice and the candidate refused to take it).  And that same inability is showing itself now in Schaffer's campaign.

Thune won in a Presidential year when the president was winning South Dakota by 25 points---that is what made the difference.

"But when I see a 9-11 victim family on television, or whatever, I'm just like, 'Oh, shut up!' I'm so sick of them because they're always complaining."  Glenn Beck

[ Parent ]
Managers
Are only as good as their candidates listen.  Since we don't know what happened in that situation, how can Wadhams be blamed?

To say that Thune won only because of Bush's coattails isn't accurate.  That's to say that anyone would have won.

The truth of the matter is that it was a lot of different factors.  Thune ran (with Wadham's help) a better campaign.  It was a Republican year.  Bush was carrying the state by a large margin.

But Daschle's defeat was anything but a sure thing (hence it was called the biggest upset of the cycle).  Daschle had survived tough challenges in the past in a Republican state and during presidential cycles.  His claiming of VA (or was it D.C.?) as his residence instead of SD was one other big issue.

So it was a lot of different factors, which is why I said Wadhams deserves some of the credit.  Because he does.

But to say it was all Bush's coat-tails just isn't correct

[ Parent ]
Well,
obviously the quality of the candidate has something to do with the success of the campaign (no campaign manager--no matter how good--would be able to get an Alan Keyes or a Ralph Nader elected to any statewide office---unless they were running against each other then one would likely win by default).

But the fact of the matter is the tide was flowing in Thune's direction and Daschle's manager was unable to do anything to stem the tide and the Thune/Wadhams team didn't do anything wrong to change the tide.  They rode the tide

South Dakota is a conservative Republican state.  The fact that Daschle and Johnson have been successful there is an anomoly similar to Lincoln Chaffe's success in Rhode Island.  The fact that Sheldon Whitehouse was able to bring him down in 2006 doesn't mean that Whitehouse's campaign manager is a brilliant strategist.  He helped a Democrat win in a democratic state.

"But when I see a 9-11 victim family on television, or whatever, I'm just like, 'Oh, shut up!' I'm so sick of them because they're always complaining."  Glenn Beck

[ Parent ]
That's not comparing apples to apples though
Because as Senate minority/majority leader, Daschle had access to a wide range of donors and made a compelling argument as to what he could do as a Senator even though he was a Democrat.  Daschle didn't have any substantial primary competetion in 2004 as Chaffee did in 2006.  Oh, and let's not forget that unseating a leader of either party is huge, and that an incumbent has a better then 90% chance of getting re-elected...

Chaffee was a do-nothing Senator who only got into office because of his father's connections.  But he was an incumbent none the less who won by a large margin in 2000 despite the Dem lean of Rhode Island...in a presidential year.  So, yeah Whitehouse's victor was great and his manager deserves credit.  But they aren't brilliant until they can duplicate other victories in other states

[ Parent ]
Yes, but....
Chaffee's voting record was more in tune to his constituents than was Daschle's.

"But when I see a 9-11 victim family on television, or whatever, I'm just like, 'Oh, shut up!' I'm so sick of them because they're always complaining."  Glenn Beck

[ Parent ]
Voting records
Daschle had a liberal voting record before he became minority/majority leader.  It never hurt him in his house and senate runs before.

Besides, all the more reason why Whitehouse's manager deserves more credit....

[ Parent ]
A blind...
monkey could have knocked Daschle off.

His leadership role forced him to take liberal positions in a conservative state.  Thune was a statewide tested candidate and a known commodity in South Dakota.  Further, he faced no crises to really test Wadhams' skills.

Wadhams demonstrated in his mis-handling of Allen's campaign and the way he is currently handling Schaffer implosion that he is a good manager when the going is easy...

I'll admit, I was concerned when Colorado Republicans bagged him as their party chair...  I don't have that same concern now.

BREAKING! Sweatshop Schaffer lied to the Press!
While in Grand Junction for a fundraiser with Cheney, Bob Schaffer had the following to say about his Mariana/Abramoff connections:

Asked during a press conference following Cheney's visit about Denver Post reports that link him to an effort by jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff to quash labor reform in the Mariana Islands in 1999, Schaffer was visibly angry.

"I am really disgusted with the tone and tenor and direction of The Denver Post stories. I have had no contact with the individuals in the story, particularly Jack Abramoff," Schaffer said. "It's a matter of fiction. That's all I'm going to say about it."

Schaffer went to the Northern Mariana Islands as part of a trip partially arranged by Abramoff's firm. He visited textile factories which were the target of a class-action lawsuit alleging abuses of workers. Abramoff had been hired by factory owners and island officials to stave off attempts at reform.

Not only am I disgusted Schaffer thinks sweatshops should be a model for immigration reform, but I'm also amazed at how stupid he thinks the voters are. Bob, there is a money trail that connects YOU to each of the individuals in the story!

"Suddenly, it may be cool to be American again" - William J. Kole

Well
With this and with Wadhams' comments, we see how they are going to try and fight this story: say that it boils down to personal contacts and deny that they existed.

This is a red herring. The point of this story is that a Republican US Senate candidate in 2008 ideologically supports an economic model that exploited women, forced abortions and amounted to slave labor + in 1999 this same candidate participated in a lobbyist-created scheme that tried to whitewash human rights abuses by rewarding congressmen with trips to the beach.

great story in this morning's Rocky re: the Beauprez campaign's desperate attempt.....
....to raise the issue of agricultural trespass plea bargains as an issue in the '06 campaign.
Dick Wadhams should be relieved that this Beauprez screw up from the '06 campaign may serve to take some attention away from Bob Schaffer's screw up in the '08 campaign.

It's not a zero-sum attention game
In fact, revisiting the Beauprez meltdown will only encourage people to talk about the Schaffer campaign in those terms.

Well, he is your U.S. Senate Candidate. n/t
