Shakeup at Polis Campaign

by: Colorado Pols

Thu Mar 27, 2008 at 15:07:27 PM MDT

As the Rocky Mountain News reports:

The campaign manager for congressional candidate Jared Polis is moving to an advisory role so she can spend more time helping her husband's restaurant business.

Wanda James said today she will remain "very" involved in Polis' campaign as a strategist, but won't be overseeing the day-to-day operations. Her successor has not been named.

James' husband, Scott Durrah, owns 8 Rivers Cafe in northwest Denver, and is opening another Caribbean restaurant in LoDo this summer.

"One of the first things we're going to do is have a fund-raiser for Jared," James said.

We haven't seen a statement yet from the Polis campaign on this, so the News story seems to have come out of James' efforts to get ahead of any announcement.

The Polis campaign has been an absolute mess almost from the beginning, culminating in a near-disastrous Democratic caucus effort that saw Polis come dangerously close to falling below the 30 percent support level needed to make the ballot. Polis badly needed to make a staff change in order to salvage his flailing campaign (if you really think James "resigned," you're smoking something), and it will be interesting to see who he brings in to right the ship.

I think this is a wise move. And overdue.
James is a lovely person from what I understand from folks that worked on Fawcett's campaign but she's been in over her head from the get go on this campaign.

Totally necessary
If Wanda was the one running things, it wasn't working and needs someone else.

If Jared was the one running things then he needs to bring in someone strong enough to tell him what he needs to do and not do.

Wanda was always very pleasant when emailing and in person and on that count I'm sorry to see her go.

Waiting...
I'm waiting to hear from you how this is really a good thing for his campaign in disguise.

[ Parent ]
I think anyone named Wanda
Should get a second chance.

Always look on the bright side of life...?

[ Parent ]
He's not dead yet ;)

[ Parent ]
He needs to....
bring in whoever ran Perlmutter's campaign last time around.

That was a nearly pitch perfect campaign--primary and general.

"But when I see a 9-11 victim family on television, or whatever, I'm just like, 'Oh, shut up!' I'm so sick of them because they're always complaining."  Glenn Beck

Sure, sure...
Or maybe he should bring in Jesus. I hear he's good. And as long as he's wishing for stuff, how about a pony?

Seriously, who would want to touch this campaign? I know JP's got cash to burn, but I would think anyone of any kind of a reputation would consider JP's campaign damaged goods at best.

And why does he need a campaign manager anyway? He seems to do exactly what he wants no matter who tells him otherwise.

[ Parent ]
Absolutely.
You turn this campaign around and you can write your own ticket.  You fail and no big deal.  The campaign was failing miserably when you came on board....there is absolutely no downside to taking on this campaign.

I think she's Perlmutter's Chief of Staff
Jared's used RBI before, I wonder if that's where he's headed.

[ Parent ]
Danielle Radovich-Piper
There was a great team effort on the Perlmutter campaign, and there are a number of consultants there that Jared might consider trying to hire, but luring Danielle would be quite a trick.

She is in D.C. heading up Ed's staff, and it looks to me like she is very happy and successful there.

In addition, Perlmutter has endorsed Fitz-Gerald, so you would have to figure that in for a lot of his loyalists.

I suspect that Jared will bring someone in from one of the coasts, but we'll see.

[ Parent ]
Maybe
Jared will re-register as a Republican and run against JFG in the general...

[ Parent ]
Hey it seems to be working for Josh Hanfling the HD-6
I'm sure Jared's friends at the Independence Institute would be happy.

Jared wouldn't have to hide his swift boat money or explain his support of vouchers.  No one would ask him why he has the father of reaganomics working for him either.

Sounds like a great idea.

But I give more Jared more credit than that, besides the GOP is not a friendly place for a gay man.

[ Parent ]
Hanfling's no R
I know him well, and I've been really disappointed in his retreat from reality and into using words like "working family" and "take back our country".

He's a good man, and that district would be lucky to have him.

What do you think about the Log Cabin Republicans?

[ Parent ]
Hanfling was an R up until about a year and a half ago
He speaks in republicaneese. His answer on TABOR, "grow the economy" (which aside from misunderstanding the nature of TABOR, is a republican answer).

As to LCR's, a gay man (or woman) can be fiscally conservative, a foriegn policy hawk, or a limited government advocate, but as long as the GOP is intent on denying gays basic human rights, I don't see the GOP as a comfortable place for folks in the LGBT community: litmus tests matter.

Is Jared going to apologize to Shafroth?
Jared Polis accused Will Shafroth of criminal misconduct two weeks ago.

Now it turns out he has no proof at all of criminal misconduct by Shafroth.

Is Polis going to do the right thing and apologize? I know he wants to just go
"never mind"

What Polis did was wrong and he should apologize now.

why don't you post that message more often ?

[ Parent ]
can we vote him off the island?
for being so annoying

[ Parent ]
what a wild and craazy guy
Jared Polis had the money to hire anybody.

Instead he hired someone who had never worked on a winning campaign. Why?

Hey Jared is not going after votes. Jared was going for laughs. One press release after another with false information. Claiming big mo after losing big in the caucuses. This guy did not want a campaign manager he wanted a straight man.

Can't you just see Jared doing his best Rodney Dangerfield "I don't get no respect" while playing with his tie. "I hired a manager I didn't know she was a fast food manager"

This guy is hilarious. Far more hilarious than Shafroth who also went for the laughs instead of a real campaign manager.

Jared get in line with Jay Fawcett and Darrell Watson. Good guys who could have won if they had chosen a real campaign manager instead of a clown. Darrell, Jay and Jared so much fun and the joke is on you.

Sharoth and Polis two wild and crazy guys who'd rather make jokes than run serious campaigns.

You are way out of line
James is a good democrat who did us Democrats a favor fighting the good fight in CD5

[ Parent ]
another funny guy
Jay Fawcett ran below every other Democratic candidate in CD 5. Far from energizing CD 5 they were a drag. They ran twenty points behind Merrifield and even ran behind the candidate who challenged Garza-Hicks withno money.  Fawcett had a real shot at winning and was within five points with two months to go.

Fawcett's campaign was the same as Polis's. Lots of fun, lots of gaffes lots of wild baeless charges and everyone had a good time until election day rolled around.

It is good to know that even after leaving the campaign she is still regaling the press with funny tales about Polis. As a lover of irony and good humor we know that there will be plenty of laughs to go around with this dynamite team comedy team. They may be apart but the laughs will keep on coming.

[ Parent ]
how cruel you are
To mock the departed campaign manager like this is cruel. She may not be very good but does she deserve your mocking and sarcastic humor? I know you are trying to be funny but mockery and sarcasm in your "praise" is over the top. You and Barron X should be ashamed.

[ Parent ]
with Wanda's help, Jay Fawcett got the Dems in CD-05 energized to a level NEVER seen before
.
she got national figures to come here to campaign for Jay

he got the highest % of a Dem in something like 18 years.

she raised impressive bucks.

No progressive could have won that race under ANY circumstances.  And Jay is cutting edge progressive.

Then, as now, the ONLY way the Dems take that seat is by running a Conservative.
.

[ Parent ]
Conservative Dem won't do it by itself
The other necessary step, IMO, is redistricting after 2010.  Without better balance of parties I don't see how any Dem realistically can overcome the natural reflex to stay with one's traditional party affiliation, barring the live boy/dead girl scenario.

[ Parent ]
no, not enough
.
it would take a destructive fight in the GOP primary, too.
and lingering resentments.

that nearly happened in 2006, but the field was too large, diluting the venom.
.

[ Parent ]
Gosh, Lover.
You've sure been busy in the entire fourteen days you've been at this blogsite.

"I wouldn't characterize caloric intake as "professional development." c rork

[ Parent ]
Jared --- You're FINALLY Getting It
It's about time you woke up and smell the coffee.  Maybe it was your VC friends that got in your face and gave you religion?

Your staff is inept. Wanda James leaving is one step in the right direction.  Now get serious and make more changes. If you want to win this election, you need to get moving fast and bring on board people who actually care about you and what you stand for and not for your money and feeding your ego.

Good news.

.
Isn't that what Jared stands for, money and ego?

[ Parent ]
That was my understanding
But apparently in the last year, he has told a few people otherwise--and they believe him. Scary how politicians are able to make people believe the opposite of reality.

[ Parent ]
I've never found him to stand for either
I've met Jared occasionally over the years, the first time well before the Excite purchase. He's always been a very nice down to earth guy.

I've found that while in some cases money changes a person, in almost all cases money changes how others react to a person.

[ Parent ]
Down to Earth?
Now that is a riot. That is the least accurate description of Jared Polis I have ever heard. He has his head in the clouds more than just about any politician in the state.

[ Parent ]
Maybe a poor choice of words
By "down to earth" I mean that he has struck me as just another person in the high-tech industry. Yes he's very imaginative, but that is more common than not in high-tech and so to me it's normal.

I can see how to someone outside the industry it would strike you as different.
