Dick Wadhams, the man Republicans brought in - to much fanfare - to head the State Republican Party, has apparently found a better job. As the Rocky Mountain News reports:

To no one's surprise, Republican Dick Wadhams is now officially campaign manager for Bob Schaffer's U.S. Senate bid.

Wadhams said today he will remain chairman of the Colorado Republican Party, but he has hired an executive director to run the day-to-day operations.

Wadhams had been performing both the chairman and director roles since being named chairman in March 2005.

Democrats for months have been saying that Wadhams also was pulling the strings for Schaffer's campaign. Just last month, Wadhams responded to the Democrats' charges by saying, "That's crazy."

He said today he wasn't running the campaign before now.

The GOP executive director is Mike Britt, who worked in Boston on Mitt Romney's presidential campaign, which ended in February.

That's swell for Republicans that Wadhams is going to head up Schaffer's flailing Senate campaign (and it is definitely a boost), but, um, what about the rest of the elephants? This move isn't going to create a lot of optimism for Republicans hoping to win back some seats in the state legislature. If Schaffer wins the Senate race but Republicans get drilled in every other race, is that really a worthwhile trade-off?

Payment
This doesn't answer the million dollar question (or maybe it's just six figures...): Is he still getting paid by the GOP?

I won't jump to conclusions. Anyone know the answer?

To whom much is given much is expected.

GOP must win Senate; McCain needs winning senate candidate here
As I read the story, Wahdams will continue as the GOP chair with the help of a new executive director. So I don't see how his work with Schaffer will hurt an already hopeless state GOP.

Months ago, Wahdams said he didn't think the GOP had a chance to regain the legislture until 2010. He's focusing on what's winnable, and given the extreme leftism of Udall, Schaffer has a good chance this year, regardless of ColoPols' spin.

In my mind, yes.  Keeping what we have is better than losing seats

I agree
I agree, except for the flip side. I would trade the state house for a new Democratic Senate seat that could last for decades any day of the week.

[ Parent ]
I wouldn't
TABOR is a dagger aimed on the long term future of this state. We have to fix it. And without the state house it won't happen. Even with the state house I worry that they won't make the changes needed to truly fix our funding constraints.

Wadhams taking over the Schaffer campaign
will probably have a morale boosting effect on some other races and candidates, so it's partially a matter of the value of a positive image.
As far as holding the Senate seat and losing everything else, that's not really the case.  Even in 2008, there are safe R Congressional districts - 5 and 6 -and safe state legislative seats.  Whether or not Coffman costs Republicans the Sec. of State isn't up to Schaffer or Wadhams, and the outcome of the Schaffer/Udall race won't affect the next President.

What about winning seats in the legislature
The Republicans are missing candidates in over half the competitive races. When is the State GOP going to focus on recruitment?

Maybe in 2012?

I wonder what the legislative districts will look like in 2012....
with a redistricting commission packed with a majority of appointees named by Bill Ritter and Mary Mullarkey......fair and balanced, to be sure!  :)

[ Parent ]
When they're not so depressed about it?
The GOP is having severe recruiting issues nationally as well as locally.  They'll shake it off, but probably not this cycle.

"We're below sharks and contract killers." -- Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), speaking on Congress's 9% approval rating

[ Parent ]
You're correct
The GOP is having severe recruiting issues.  Just look at the post about the JeffCo Republican Assembly.  Apparently, they nominated four state house candiates and one state senate condidate from the floor which means these people aren't really committed candidates.  If someone dosen't have the 'fire in the belly' they usually don't win.  This all adds up to the Democrats controlling congressional redistricting in 2011.

My guess is (and it is just a guess), Mr. Wadhams saw this coming and needed to bail out. Otherwise, he would be held responsible for a bad Republican year in Colorado.  No money and no committed candidates in the state house and senate races is a formula for disaster and with Benson now president of CU the financial prospects for the Colorado Republican Party look bleak indeed.

[ Parent ]
Easy out?
Maybe CU was Benson's way of extricating himself, his money, and his friends' money from a bad Republican year, too.

[ Parent ]
Ha
"Maybe CU was Benson's way of extricating himself . . ."

Now that is an original thought.  Benson takes on one of the most difficult jobs in Colorado, in order to avoid donating money to his party.  for a cycle or two.  Classic.

Maybe that's why Polis is running for Congress, to step away from getting sucked dry by the Dems, leaving the heavy lifting for Striker and Gill.

[ Parent ]
This all adds up to the Democrats controlling congressional redistricting in 2011
I wonder if there's any way of moving some of C.D. 2 into C.D. 4 to make C.D. 4 a little more competitive.....The other option is the play around with C.D. 6 by trading some of its precincts with C.D. 1.  (I know Princess Diana will have a cow over this latter suggestion but it would help cement her party as the majority party.)
It's never too early to start thinking about these things.

[ Parent ]
You've got the right idea
I think we are going to pick up a district.  It will probably be a western suburban (part 7 part 6 part 1).

4 will be reworked to make it D friendly.

They'll stuff every Possee Comitatus tax protestor, White Aryan Resistance member, Young earth creationist, and the rest of the right wing crazy's they can into 5 and 6.

No matter how conservative the congressman is there will be knuckle dragging mouth breathers saying "he's a librul RINO" if doesn't say ridiculous stuff and we will be treated to a parade of Republicans that make Tancredo and Lamborn look like scholars.

Meanwhile the Democratic party will use their every stupid statement on fundraising letters.

I don't like gerrymandered districts, and I don't like extreamist, but that is the world we find ourselves in.

[ Parent ]
Sad but Danny you are dead on the Republicans
are only half way to the bottem. Post redistricting 2010 I think the hole will have been dug.
Then Republicans will begin to speak to Unaffiliates in order to win and then the Democrats bloated with power will run hard left and the GOP will take back control for the 2020 redistricting. "For every season turn turn turn..."

Only 12 years to go!!!

LOL
You're right, no majority is forever, especially in a state like Colorado.  Someday, even Utah will elect a Democrat somewhere...and Massachusetts might even elect a Republican to congress.
