Cory Gardner Loves Him Some Ken Buck

Republican Ken Buck announced today what should come as little surprise: Rep. Cory Gardner has endorsed his campaign to replace him in CD-4.

BuckGardnerTwitter
It’s a love-fest in the Northeast Corner.

Buck made the announcement on Twitter this morning (see image at right). While the endorsement isn't a surprise for ideological reasons, it still seems a bit strange to play right into the hands of the campaign of Sen. Mark Udall, which has been branding Gardner as a younger version of Buck.

Just a few weeks ago, Buck withdrew from the U.S. Senate race in order to make way for Gardner and to make his own run for CD-4. We've heard rumors since that "backroom deal" was first made public that Buck may have approached Gardner at some point to consider the campaign switcheroo. Others have attributed the maneuver to national GOP strategist Karl Rove, with less concern for Buck's future.

Whatever the order of discussion, the deal would need to include Gardner's support for Buck in CD-4 for Buck to not get swamped by primary challenger. Here's the email from Buck's campaign announcing the news:

Friends,

I am writing today because I wanted to let you know that I am supporting Ken Buck as he runs to be our next representative in Congress.

Washington’s lack of commonsense and leadership grows daily. In the many years I have known Ken, his dedication to helping others as a District Attorney, coach and community member, have shown me that he will help fill this void. Ken will work hard to put Colorado and America back on track.

I look forward to working with Ken to return fiscal responsibility, free-market economic ideas and commonsense Colorado values to Washington. Will you join me in supporting Ken?

We cannot be successful without your help. Anything you give will be used to introduce voters to Ken, combat the negative attacks and spread our message. The time to act is now. Show your support today.

Ken will be a great, independent leader for the 4th Congressional District.

                Sincerely,

With a plethora of Republicans jockeying for the right to win the GOP nomination in CD-4, it will be interesting to see if any of the candidates start bad-mouthing Gardner now that he has officially backed Buck. With the caucus season underway and the June Primary just around the corner, there's little time left to consider pulling punches.

  1. You forgot to note the email's subject line: "My Choice"

because who better to talk about personal choice than one rabid Personhood supporter endorsing another?

    1. It appears ol' "50 cent" has the independent demographic tied up already.  His tag line is, "An Independent Voice, A New Direction"  wink

  2. I wonder how committed Rep. Gardner is to the senate race. Yesterday, I received a fundraising letter from him – the first one. Let's see, he let the cat out of the bag on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 that he was going to run for the U.S. Senate. The next Saturday, March 1st, he announces at a lumber yard in Denver and the photos show he already had professionally printed signs with "Cory Gardner for U.S. Senate" printed on them. One also has to assume that he knows or already had a direct mail consultant under contract for his reeleciton to the House and yet, it took him three weeks to send a fundraising letter out to voters which contained a plea that he needs to raise as much as possible before the reporting period ends on March 31, 2014. If I was in his shoes and possessed a sense of urgency about the senate race, especially since it is so late in the election cycle, the first fundraising letter would have been in the mail on March 1st. It doesn't appear he is geared-up and motivated to run this race.

According to another candidate for U.S. Senate I know, St. Sen. Baumgardner, Mr. Gardner isn't showing-up at Republican gatherings, even on the weekends.

I wonder if Mr. Gardner is just tired of politics.

Assuming he can get through the nominating process, Mr. Buck is the big winner in this switch.

  3. It will be interesting to see how the other Republican Elder Statesman types react and where the traditional Republican endorsments go.  My sense is that Buck gets the conservative and middle of the road Republicans going with him, and that the only Republican who will be seen in the same room with Renfroe is Dudley Brown, the Rocky Mountain Gun Owner's resident whack-job.  Should be an interesting few months.

Renfroe has some money, not all of it was lost in the now closed New Frontier Bank in which he owned shares and his father was a Director, and he will self-fund.  Brown has an infamous lack of integrity and will just make stuff up. http://www.5280.com/magazine/2013/08/Dudley-browns-war

The real question is given how whacky Renfroe is, like objecting to mandatory recess time because it would result in the "feminization of our boys"  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/11/scott-renfroe-mandating-r_n_834668.html  could Brown even make up anything that could top the real Scott Renfroe? I guess time will tell.
