At Least They're Not Your Legislators: WTF Arizona?

  • by: Colorado Pols
You suck, Arizona.
Arizona lawmakers have passed a bill to ALLOW discrimination of a specific group of people.

In another edition of our long-running feature, "At Least They're Not Your Legislators," we take you to Arizona, where…well, we'll let CNN explain:

Arizona's Legislature has passed a controversial bill that would allow business owners, as long as they assert their religious beliefs, to deny service to gay and lesbian customers.

The bill, which the state House of Representatives passed by a 33-27 vote Thursday, now goes to Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican and onetime small business owner who vetoed similar legislation last year but has expressed the right of business owners to deny service.

"I think anybody that owns a business can choose who they work with or who they don't work with," Brewer told CNN in Washington on Friday. "But I don't know that it needs to be statutory."…

…In a statement, Anna Tovar, the state senate Democratic minority leader, said: "With the express consent of Republicans in this Legislature, many Arizonans will find themselves members of a separate and unequal class under this law because of their sexual orientation. This bill may also open the door to discriminate based on race, familial status, religion, sex, national origin, age or disability."

The Greater Phoenix Economic Council, in a letter to Brewer on Friday, urged the governor to veto Senate Bill 1062, saying the "legislation will likely have profound, negative effects on our business community for years to come."

"The legislation places businesses currently in Arizona, as well as those looking to locate here, in potentially damaging risk of litigation, and costly, needless legal disputes," council President Barry Broome wrote, adding that four unidentified companies have vowed to locate elsewhere if the legislation is signed.

You know you've gone a bit too far off the deep end when your ultra-conservative, Tea Party-loving Gov. Jan Brewer can't even support you. Partisan politics aside, this is an absolutely disgusting piece of legislation; the very idea that you would specifically allow someone the right to discriminate against a particular group of people is incredibly sad. This is no different than saying business owners have the right to have separate "Whites Only" bathrooms.

    1. Thats wicked, davebarnes! On the other hand, one would think Arizona might have learned something from watching the Amendment 2 boycott here in Colorado. Guess not. It has to be a bad idea when even the aptly named Jeff Flake says it should not be signed into law. I guess I didn't know Arizona's treasury is so flush that it can withstand not only the boycott that is sure to follow, but the (most likely successful) lawsuits seeking to overturn this throwback to the "good old days".

  1. Yep, looks like a nasty case of Gay Fever is sweeping through the GOP-controlled state legislatures.

Idaho wants to top both AZ and Kansas with 2 bills:

    http://www.slate.com/blogs/outward/2014/02/19/idaho_anti_gay_segregation_discrimination_against_gays_will_be_legal.html?wpisrc=burger_bar

Under the bill, a doctor may refuse to treat gay people and be protected from losing his license—even if the American Medical Association requires nondiscriminatory treatment. (The bill’s language is so broad, in fact, that a doctor could also legally deny treatment to single mothers.)

GOP is still trying to corner the market on Stoopid!  And I'd say they've just about succeeded.

    1. Funny how they spend half their time accusing Dems of unfairly labeling them anti-woman, anti-minority, anti-gay.  Then they spend the other half proudly claiming those labels for themselves and bragging about it. Maybe they think the rest of us have cornered the market on stoopid.

      1. A great piece of campaign lit or TV ad should compare the GOP agenda vs. Democratic agenda.  Something like:

This is what GOP legislative priorities have been the last 4 years…

This is what Democratic legislative priorities have been in the last 4 years…

You can fill in the details, naturally.  It won't be pretty for the GOTP wackos.

    2. Stoopid is right, Davie. I went and read it. It is Son of Amendment 2, and will suffer the same fate if passed. This one won't get past the Federal District Court level as the District Court will simply cite Romer v Evans and strike the thing down in its tracks. However, the damage to Idaho's  business, tourism and convention business will have been done. If their legislature's that dumb, I shan't pity them

  2. As I wrote a while back, Rand Paul said in response to a question during his 2008 Senatoral campaign, that he did not believe that governments should be able to discriminate, but he did feel that private property owners should have the right to decide to whom they would serve and to whom they would refuse service.  This attitude. if enacted into law,  would destroy the public accommodation laws that got rid of Jim Crow and allow all citizens of the US to have the equal protection of the law as guaranteed by the 14th amendment.  The Arizona law awating the governor's veto or signature; the Kansas proposed law that may have died in the Kansas State Senate; and the public campaign waged by the Colorado right wing on behalf of the baker who would not create a wedding cake for a gay couple are all part of the same effort to change our constitution by weakening the 14th amendment.  The success of the campaign to "reeducate" the public to allow discrimination on religious grounds can be seen by the fact that the Arizona legislature passed the law awaiting action by the Arizona governor.

It may only be the pressure from commercial interests that prevent the Arizona law from taking effect, but the power of the campaign to change public opinion should not be minimized.

Again, I urge that there be more than civil rights advocates, not just gay activities, engaged in a public campaign to defeat the effort to influence the public.

    1. I don't think the AZ public has been "reeducated" at all. They voted in the bastards before they started making these arguments for SB1070 and this year's feel free to discriminate bill.

Sorry, d, but there's no "there" there.

      1. Noise is being made about relocating the upcoming Super Bowl in Arizona…I hope they do.

How much longer will Americans tolerate the racism, sexism, and all around bigotry of todays' Republican party? They repeatedly show themselves to be the lying, hateful, people they really are. How anyone with a soul or a conscience can support this throwback gaggle of revisionists is beyond me.

        1. And yet, DC, those throwback gaggle of revisonists control the House of Representatives, may well take back the US Senate; control 30 governorships, now,  and control all state offices in 23 states.  I suggest that we all try and figure out how these gaggle, etc, are so successful.

            1. This format is crazy….many comments ago, PR said that "there was no there, there."  My comment about brands was in response to PR, not DC,

I hate this format.  I think it is the work of moles from Red State.

            2. We already know that. They have enormous sums of money and they lie and cheat.

And if your comment was to PR, why did you use my initials?

And you, of course, are the only one trying to figure out how they are successful. The rest of us are complacent idiots who don't care about our country and never challenge the right…(see: AQCC hearings…another crushing defeat for us complacent, do-nothing Dems.)

              1. @DC,

I thought I was replying to your comment and then I thought I had replied to PR's comment.  That is why I said I hate this format.  I did not realize there was so much "traffic" on the thread and that my comments would not be posted in sync….

You are wrong, the rest of you are not "complacent idiots who don't care about our country and never challenge the right."   However, you did say how these "g,etc" get public support was beyond you…..so I said that we all ought to figure out how they get the public support……

I argue that there is a propaganda campaign going on..and that advertising works…..because these "g…etc." are winning votes.

Why do you play the victim?? Focusing on me makes a lot of people, I guess, feel superior.  Go right ahead.

      2. Playing to prejudices and making them "okay" is an important part of an ongoing campaign from the radical right.  If advertising did not work, we would all being using the exact same brand of soap.

  3. What's the problem? They're just doing the bidding of the majority of their constituents, right?   At least it's out in public, where we can all see it.
