I want a make a comment about Nazi Germany in the early 30s. I have hesitated before because I am not Jewish, at least not in the last two generations. Please know that I respect your religion.
As you, of all people, know that I have been begging for years for the Democrats not to be complacent, not to depend,soley on the data model, and not to dismiss or disregard the continued media campaign and political organization happening on the right.
In Germany as Hitler began his rise to power, many people dismissed him as a "failed paperhanger." and not to be taken seriously. Among those who did were members of the Jewish middle class, particularly in Berlin. They were the professors, the scientists, the doctors, the intellectual elite, the writers, the musicians, the composers. They believed that they were safe because of their positions and their education from the Bavarian fool. They were not. But, by the time they realized it, it was too late.
I grew up taught by the men who won World War II. I was told over and over again, not to let what happened in German, happen here. I hear hate speech.
I see the results in "radical right wing" wins, over and over again in "purple Colorado." I will not be complacent.
Fine. But if you are living in actual fear that we are anywhere near the verge of a state in which young children are going to be tortured to death by doctors in experiments on say, how long it takes to freeze to death or women are going to have surgeries performed on them to study how long a person can survive the shock of surgery without anesthesia, in other words actual Nazi Germany, pardon me for dismissing that fear as a severe case of over dramatization.
You might feel better if you would take notice just for a second or two a day of all the radical TPers who have handed victories to Dems here and in other states (remember the I am not a witch lady and other crazies who handed Dem candidates victories even in 2010) instead of only focusing on the negative side of that coin. It's because of them forcing the GOTP so far to the right that Dems were able to take the WH in 2008 and 2012 when many Americans would have been much more comfortable with a truly moderate R than with a black guy with a Muslim name. They will continue to have trouble ever taking it again unless the GOTP figures out a way to be the plain old GOP again.
On the other hand you really do seem to prefer going all in on maximum hysterical pearl clutching at the drop of a hat. So enjoy. But don't expect all of us to join you in failing to recognize alarm settings between 0 and 11. There's a lot of territory between complacent and overwrought. My parents' and their friends and family, the people who raised, me were Jewish WWII vets or married to them. I had neighbors with numbers on their arms. I think I'm a pretty good judge of the alarm scale.
I really do think part of your fascination with rightie media isn't just a desire to keep track of what they're doing but also because you really do see things in much the same simplistic way they do without recognizing degree or proportion. Their black and white style of perception and discussion and their taste for hysterical fear suits you. It doesn't suit me.
We are of different generations. I was born right before WWII. I brought into a home where the radio was always on and it was always talking voices. I can still remember some of the lineup. The radio was on in every home on our block, in our neighborhood, in my country. The radio was on because everyone waited for news of the progress of the War. My father was in the thick of the War. Every family had a father, a brother, a husband in that War. My mother also, I think, wanted the company of hearing those voices. Later, when I lived overseas, the radio was our link with home. It was AFN…Armed Forces Network..the stories and the music was always a few months behind the states….but the football scores were always current!
Radio was always my media link with the world. I heard the Cuban Missille Crisis resolved when KIMM interruped the music to say that the Russian ship had been boarded and was turning back. I was absolutely shocked that KIMM would actually stopped playing music to report that news. I heard the news of Kennedy''s assassination on the radio….I didn't have access to a TV. So I can not remember any time that radio was not part of my life.
As I say now my sight is compromised by MAD. I have the radio on. I don't like what I hear. To suggest that my interest in radio is because I like hearing the "righies" simply demonstrates, I believe, your inability to understand people that have had different life experiences that you or perhaps you only want to hear your own view reinforced.
I think that we have had a civil conversation. I thank you for that.
We all know that it's rightie radio you listen too obsessively and that was the radio listening I mean. I clearly said "rightie media'. It's not the only thing available. Try NPR or something once in awhile.
As for for chalking it up to a generational thing, I know plenty of people somewhat older than myself (I was born in 1952) who don't share your "life view" and are just as aware as I am of settings between 0 and 11 and shades between black and white. Also, with just as little use for sky is falling pearl clutching.
That would include my mom who, as you might imagine, is no spring chicken but is as smart, sensible and engaged in her own local, national and world affairs as I would hope everyone could be. She was never a pearl clutcher and neither was her mother or grandmother before her. Maybe that accounts for my low tolerance for it. Grandma and great grandma felt pretty much like if your village isn't being shelled, there are no Cossacks riding you down and there's no cholera epidemic carrying off the children, what are you making such a fuss about?
The idea that going after Hillary by bringing up Lewinsky, or that the batshitiness of Kansas 'discrimination is OK' law provides any path to electoral victory, except maybe in Kansas and similar backwaters where competitiveness is still a few decades away, is pearl clutching IMO. Differnt life experiences or worldview or what have you–its still not borne out by any facts that I can see, certainly none provided here. Garbage in (Rush et al), garbage out. Listen to too much spew and one starts to imagine that's what the world is like I suppose. But its not.

My grandmother left her village in 1903, thus escaping WWI. She hated Europe and hated its wars. I am very proud of her and her sense of survivial.
