Salazar for VP? Not on This List

by: Colorado Pols

Sat Feb 02, 2008 at 14:27:26 PM MST

As the field has narrowed for the top job, the next question becomes: Who will be the respective nominees for Vice President?

There was some talk a year ago that Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar could be a potential running mate, but that talk seems to have cooled. According to the Washington Post blog "The Fix", Salazar is not on the early list (click below for that list):

Colorado Pols :: Salazar for VP? Not on This List
THE REPUBLICANS

>> McCAIN

* Mike Huckabee: McCain and the former Arkansas governor clearly like each other, and Huckabee has served as McCain's wing man in a number of debates. Huckabee is liked and trusted in the social conservative wing of the party -- a continued weakness for McCain.

* Tim Pawlenty: The governor of Minnesota, Pawlenty doesn't get much attention nationally but he could be a nice fit for McCain. Pawlenty has been elected and reelected in a key swing state, was among the earliest supporters of McCain, and stuck by the Arizona senator in the dark days of the campaign.

* Mark Sanford: Sanford is the ultimate maverick -- unafraid to step on toes even within his own party both during his time in Washington and as the Palmetto State's governor. As a member of the House, Sanford endorsed McCain in 2000, but he stayed on the sidelines this year. Still, the two men have similar approaches to government, and Sanford has demonstrated an electoral appeal that any politician would envy.

* John Thune: Young, handsome and socially conservative, Thune, the freshman senator from South Dakota, has the complete package. Two potential problems: He is a senator in a time when people are fed up with Washington, and he hails from a tiny state that won't be in play this year.

>> ROMNEY

* Don Carcieri: The Rhode Island governor doesn't get much publicity, but he has been elected and reelected in a VERY blue state and, before getting involved in politics, was a successful businessman. Sound like someone else you know?

* Mark Sanford: By staying neutral in the South Carolina primary, Sanford preserved his chances of being picked by either Romney or McCain. Kudos to an underrated pol.

* Jim Talent: The former Missouri senator has been the chief surrogate for Romney from the start of the campaign. His decision to pass on the open governor's race in 2008 raised some eyebrows. Could he be hoping for something a little bit higher? Remember: Missouri is a key swing state and bellwether in the general election. It couldn't hurt to have a native son on the ticket.

THE DEMOCRATS

>> CLINTON

* Evan Bayh: If you look up "vice president" in the dictionary, a picture of Bayh is staring back at you. Bayh has been elected five times to statewide offices (once as secretary of state, twice as governor, twice as senator) in a reddish state in the midwest. He's also handsome and the son of a senator (and one-time presidential hopeful). Is he too milquetoast?

* Wes Clark: Clark was widely seen as a stalking horse for the Clintons in the 2004 presidential race and has remained close to the couple. With Clark, a decorated military veteran on the ticket, it would be difficult for Republicans to paint Democrats as soft of national security and foreign policy.

* John Edwards: The Edwards primary is officially on. Edwards has said he will meet with Obama and Clinton before making an endorsement. His "shake-up the status quo" message would seem to fit better with Obama, but Edwards's strongest constituencies (whites, low-income voters) may be more prone to back Clinton than Obama. Edwards has been the vice presidential nominee once already, but don't rule him out again.

* Bill Richardson: Richardson spent years as part of the Clinton administration and will be looking for his next job as he is term-limited out as New Mexico governor in 2010. Richardson is also Hispanic -- perhaps the key voting bloc in the 2008 general election.

* Ted Strickland: The case for Strickland is simple -- he's the popular governor of Ohio. Done.

* Tom Vilsack: Vilsack, the former governor of Iowa, would have been in a stronger place if Clinton had won the Iowa caucuses. She finished third. Still, Vilsack has an amazing personal story and spent eight years as the governor of a swing state in the Midwest.

>> OBAMA

* Tom Daschle: Daschle, bounced from office in 2004 by Thune, has been intimately involved in selling Obama both inside the Beltway and in the early primary states. Daschle also deserves credit for providing Obama with experienced senior staff, from chief of staff Pete Rouse to senior campaign adviser Steve Hildebrand to communications director Dan Pfeiffer.

* John Edwards: See the write-up above.

* Tim Kaine: One of the first major elected officials to go with Obama, the governor of Virginia is out of a job at the end of 2009 due to term limits. He hails from an emerging purple state, and his missionary work and comfort with talking about faith would be an intriguing addition to the ticket.

* Claire McCaskill: The freshman senator from Missouri has been one of Obama's key surrogates around the country and is trying to deliver the Show Me State to him on Tuesday. Like Talent, geography is the strongest argument in McCaskill's favor.

* Kathleen Sebelius: Perhaps the early leader for Obama's veep pick is Sebelius, now midway through her second term as governor of Kansas. Sebelius's ability to win in strongly Republican Kansas and Obama's personal ties to the Sunflower State make her a fascinating choice.

Clinton needs, and hence should pick, Obama.

Agreed, but Obama probably won't accept it
I wish he would, but he probably won't. As for Ken Salazar, I've been predicting the Clinton/Salazar ticket for the last two years.

[ Parent ]
I can see where
Clinton would want Obama but if it's Obama, he doesn't need Clinton.  He gets all the Dems who would vote for her anyway. She doesn't bring him anything he can't get without her.

I think either one of them, to be blunt, would do better with a white male running mate. A woman for President? OK.  An African-American for President? OK.  A woman AND an African American on the same ticket?  The Republican right plus every bigot in the country would unite behind a Republican Satan (or John McCain or any other R) to put a stop to that, provided Satan was white.

[ Parent ]
Oh come on

Mr Republican Dream Ticket is Mitt Romney and Condi Rice.

You get a woman, and a racial minority in one package along with a PHD and Foreign Policy experience.

Choose Clinton or Obama, and I will oppose them because of their politics, not their plumbing or their skin color.

You lib's spend more time on your racial obsession, and then have the audacity to point the finger at me and my party.  Pleeeze. We are the party of Abraham Lincoln.

Some men see things as they are, and ask why! ...I dream things that could be and ask,  Why Not !

[ Parent ]
and the party of David Duke and Strom Thurmond

[ Parent ]
Wait, are we talking
Strom Thurmond when he was a racist Democrat, or Strom Thurmond the "building bridges with blacks" the Republican?

Or when you said that, were you really thinking of Robert "KKK" Bird?

I'm confused

[ Parent ]
You have to wonder
how far Lincoln would have made it in today's GOP. My guess is that he'd be considered "too liberal."

"Thank you for putting your rank political motives on display." - ArapaGOP

[ Parent ]
Nixon was too liberal for today's Republican party
He opened the door to China.

He created the EPA.

and minority business enterprises (MBEs) were given preferential treatment in federal govt. contracts.....or what some might call affirmative action
and detente with the Soviet Union....and abolishing selective service so that the sons of Texas Congressmen no longer had to enlist in the Alabama National Guard to avoid the draft!
  Tricky Dick, the ultimate RINO!

[ Parent ]
Yeah Newsman, (imagine the tone used on Sienfeld for Newman, please)
It's because all of you conservative Republicans are so color-blind compared to we liberal bigots.  We liberal bigots will vote for the Dem ticket no matter who is on it or what color or gender they are because every possible combination of Dems is vastly superior in every way, on every issue to any of the possible combos of the current crop of Republican candidates.  Of course the Dem base can't get anyone elected all by themselves, no more than the Republicans can.  That's why all kinds of considerations come up.

Southern Dems switched en masse to the Republican party immediately following civil rights legislation and desegregation and the party of Lincoln has been happy to take advantage of racism ever since.   Except they like to call it states rights, especially while waving the confederate flag and singing Dixie.

You can't REALLY think nobody will consider race or gender in a presidential election. You are just parroting the rightie spin play-book that says things like Dem liberals are more concerned by Romney's Mormonism than Republicans are, we're more racist, we control the almost entirely Republican owned media somehow and we're a bunch of soft quiche eating elite, never mind the true  corporate elite,  made up of those who could buy and sell scores of Hollywood liberal celebrities, is almost exclusively Republican and there have long been more Dem combat Vets in congress than Republican ones.  We've heard it all before, usually out of Rush's big lying mouth.

As for Condi Rice, to call the most incompetent national security adviser and most ineffectual Secretary of State in our history part of your dream ticket doesn't say much for your judgement.  Just because a person is black like Condi or Hispanic like another total incompetent, former AG  Alberto Gonzales, doesn't necessarily make them qualified.

The Bush administration seems to think picking any minority they can find, no matter how lacking in qualifications, gives them the right to say "See?  Look how devoted to equality we are?"

Oh but I must be saying that because I'm a racist, bigoted liberal, right?  I forgot that other rightie talking point; that we liberals expect all minorities to toe the party line.

That's the real reason we don't care for Condi or Alberto.  It's nothing to do with her ignoring the 9/11 warnings or failing to stand up to Rumsfeld and insist on things like contingency planning going into Iraq as NSA or her decided lack of accomplishments in her years as SOS.  Nor does our problem with Gonzales have anything to do with his trashing of our constitution, dismal mismanagement of his department or his being a stooge for the President instead of a servant of the people.  We just expect them all to  take their marching orders from Democrats, that must be it.

You righties are just so much less bigoted and so much more devoted to equal rights than we Dems. Right.  That's why the attacks on McCain for supposedly having an illegitimate BLACK daughter were so effective back in the 2000 Republican primaries.  You really slay me, Newsman!

[ Parent ]
now there is someone we've overlooked as a potential running mate for McCain or Romney......
...Alberto Gonzales!

[ Parent ]
Yes, yes, yes
I think it should be those 2 - the Dems would be so incredibly energized in that case.

Where all the cool kids will be on Saturday - Code War!

[ Parent ]
I never would have agreed to that
before Thursday, but seeing just the two of them up there they did make a good team.

[ Parent ]
Absolutely...
I caught the debate on c-span.com yesterday and  they definitely looked good together.  I don't think it will ever happen, but I can at least imagine it now.

[ Parent ]
HEY!
You can't be nice to my candidate! I'm kidding of course. I was also taken back on how friendly the debate was, and the fact they actually debated, you know, issues!

"Suddenly, it may be cool to be American again" - William J. Kole

[ Parent ]
shallow list
At least on the Republican side.  The Fix is usually pretty good, but I don't think they thought our side through too much.

I would have added Kailey Bay-Hutchinson, Sarah Pallin, Marsha Blackburn, Fred Thompson, and Condi Rice to either Romney or McCain's list.

Marsha Blackburn?
I don't know who that is.  Bailey-Hutchison would probably be the smartest slection on your list.
Pallin will deliver Alaska's three electoral votes (which should be safely Republican without a V.P. candidate hailing from that state).  In other words, it's a waste of the V.P. slot.
Condi Rice would be a logical choice because she would make inroads into more than one traditional Democratic constituency group, but she can't seriously be considered because she's tainted by her association with Shrub and Iraq, and she's pro-choice.
I still think it will be Huckabee, although if Romney is the presidential nominee, Romney-Huck will be one hell of a shotgun wedding to attend!

[ Parent ]
Marsha Blackburn
http://blackburn.house.gov/Bio...

She's a congresswoman from Tennessee.

Pallin has a good reputation in Alaska of fighting corruption within the GOP ranks, but she's strongly conservative (and attractive), so she'd be good for an "anti-Washington" ticket.

Yeah, Romney-Huckabee would be a shot-gun wedding indeed.  They like each other about as much as I like Clinton

[ Parent ]
Shows what I know
I had no clue how Romney and Huckabee regarded each other.  Too bad.

[ Parent ]
Unfortunately
When Huck brought up stuff generally regarded by Mormons as anti-Mormon lies, Romney (and Mormons in general) got upset.  It was viewed that Huckabee was playing the religion card, and the issue highlighted anti-Mormon sentiments.

Huckabee claim ignorance and claimed that he was getting more scurtiny for being a Baptist then Romney was for being Mormon.

Since then they've had a very cold relationship.  Even though McCain is now the front runner, Huckabee attacks Romney constantly, and as the Washington Post puts it "plays wing-man for McCain".

[ Parent ]
Typical
Something that could be really good for the country is unlikely to happen because some people started rubbing each other and their supporters the wrong way, among other things.

Well, a McCain-Huckabee ticket is still better than any Democratic race, so...we'll see what happens after Tuesday.  And I see that Romney just won Maine by a bit, too.  Talk about a crazy election.

[ Parent ]
I'm glad
Romney won Maine.  Hopefully that gives him some momentum!  :)

I would have serious reservations about a McCain/Huckabee ticket....

[ Parent ]
This time tomorrow plus a few hours
and we'll know how it all starts to turn out.

McCain-Huckabee, if it happened, would be the lesser of two evils, sadly.  And that kind of choice is a necessity far too often in our world.

[ Parent ]
I'd like to see
a Romney-Huckabee ticket, too.  Romney's got economics covered, while Huckabee's for the other side of the conservative voting bloc.

Any takers on how likely such a race would be?

[ Parent ]
A woman would seem smart
This doesn't seem like the best year for two white males on the Repub ticket.

[ Parent ]
Fred would be bad for McCain
Not the best option for people worried about McCain's age. If McCain dies, you get a guy who doesn't even really want to be President!

[ Parent ]
HA!
Good point, Pols...good point indeed

[ Parent ]
Salazar is like Thompson
He would put everyone to sleep.

"There are a lot of reasons not to elect me." Mitt Romney in a moment of clarity

"I'm Mitt Romney and yes, Wolf, that's also my first name," Willard Mitt Romney demonstrating 'policy flexibility.'

[ Parent ]
Salazar should be on both their lists
and I think he will be. Hispanic Senator from a western sttae. Moderate. Ritter should also be on both lists.
I doubt Wes Clark would take it unless he really thinks he has made enough money with his consulting business.
Just because of demographics and the fact the the nominee is going to be a Senator they should probably both look closely at Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine. He may well be able to deliver the South.
McKaskill won't get through the vetting process.

Where's Zell Miller on the Democrat list?
Popular former Governor and former Senator from the quintessentially southern state of Georgia. Probably more popular in the south than John Edwards - a good Sam Nunn style Democrat. Would allow either Clinton or Obama to go after some of the conservative vote since the Republicans obviously don't want it. You want gravitas? Miller's got gravitas up the gum stump.

LOL! Good one.
I challenge you to a duel, sir!

[ Parent ]
Righto!
You choose the weapons. I'll meet you over by the gum stump in an hour or so.

[ Parent ]
You are joking, right?
Miller delivered a keynote at the REPUBLICAN convention in 2004. Look here: http://www.slate.com/id/2105700/.

No Dem would touch him with a ten-foot pole.

[ Parent ]
Did he, really?!?!?!?
Yes, I know he did.
Just trying to go for the 'strange bedfellows' thing.
It was a joke, but it still might temper the Clinton/Obama pledge to Americans that 'You want it, you'll get it with me!"
Listen to Clinton and Obama, or McCain and Romney ...
Same message: Vote for me and America (you) will get what you need (want).
You want health care? It's yours!
You want a 2,000 mile fence (wall) on the border with Mexico? It's yours! (That's like building a fence (wall) from LA to Chicago for those of you who are geographically challenged)
You want our troops out of Iraq? Done!
You want all the Muslims who hate other Muslims, and all the Muslims who hate Jews to play nice? You got it!
You want GM and Ford to beat the pants off Toyota and Honda? Hell yes, me, too!
You want more and more tax relief until only Bill Gates and Warren Buffet and Bill (and Hillary) pay taxes? You got it, and they want it, too!
You want ....

Yes, I know who Zell Miller is and what he did. Thanks for asking.

[ Parent ]
LOL!
Okay, Taxi, you got me to laugh. Thank you for that.

VP needs to be an attack dog
Salazar doesn't have the personality for it.  Edwards was too nice last time, but if he would do it he would be great this time.  Both he and Elizabeth have learned to attack hard, while sounding charming.

I think Clinton would pick Clark.  He would bring that military energy, and reassure the folks who worry about a woman commander in Chief.  He has at least campaigned before.

I don't know who Obama would pick.  I suppose his weak point would be his youth and lack of experience, so someone older and more knowledgeable about the process.  Richardson?  One of the older Senators?

How about Obama Biden
I've thought Biden would balance out Obama nicely.  He's a white male with LOTS of experience on both the judiciary and foreign relations committee.  If we was from the south instead of Delaware it would be a no brainer.

Biden's mouth...
would be difficult for the top of the ticket to control...

Hell, Biden has trouble controlling it himself.

"But when I see a 9-11 victim family on television, or whatever, I'm just like, 'Oh, shut up!' I'm so sick of them because they're always complaining."  Glenn Beck

[ Parent ]
Webb
Jim Webb might be a good choice for Obama, as he would close the defense/foreign policy deficit that will be hammered on by the Republicans in the general.

Of course, Bill Richardson would bring an immense amount of foreign policy experience to the ticket.  I've always thought he had one of the greatest resumes ever for the office of President; given his somewhat lackluster campaign skills, that resume could do great things for a more charismatic Presidential candidate.

Good choice
Conservative, southern, strong with the hill folk, doesn't have a leg history to attack.

Bristle with righteous rage, but remains controlled.

Could put a soft red state into play.

He'd be damn tough as a VP.

I like Biden, but I think Webb would be perfect.

[ Parent ]
Agreed
Webb would be a great choice for Obama.  But BO's got an uphill battle with Billary before he gets to consider that question...I'm pulling for him.

McCain's choice would be perhaps most important, due to his age.

Read a Great Article the other day
And I wish I could remember the publication, but I cant at the moment. The main thrust of the article was that when picking a VP a candidate shouldnt pick the someone that shores up their own perceived weaknesses, but rather a person that reinforces their strengths. The reasoning was that if you pick a person that covers any weakness it makes those weaknesses more pronounced and as such easier to attack.

On the other hand, by picking a candidate that reinforces your strengths it puts your strengths in an even more positive light.

How this should be delineated to the individual candidates I dont know, but as a former Edwards supporter now backing Obama, I would love to see an Obama/Edwards ticket.

Interesting thought...
...8:30 AM on the sunny bayou.  Heat wave, high 70's, low 80's soon. I hate it.

Since Edwards is the originator of "change" before Obama or Hillary knew what "change" was, that would certainly reinforce the article's thrust.

OTH, if Obama gets the "change" voters anyway, why open a flank to the, say, "no military background" voters?

Not sure I agree with article.

Its a blog not a publication, but I still think the argument is solid.

as I said ages ago
nobody outside of this site thinks Salazar is in line for the VP slot.

Many of us on this site don't see it either
