Tancredo Gets Matching Funds

From The Denver Post:

Tom Tancredo's presidential quest qualified for federal matching funds Wednesday, a boost his campaign said will keep it alive awhile longer...

Tancredo, a Littleton Republican known for his criticism of U.S. immigration policies, now will get a dollar-for-dollar match up to the first $250 of every contribution he's received this year...

In paperwork filed June 30 with the Federal Election Commission, Tancredo had raised $2.8 million and had about $556,000 on hand. Qualifying for matching funds means Tancredo's campaign can get a bank loan for about $2.5 million, Buchanan said. That loan is paid back with the matching funds, which will come beginning next year...

...To qualify for matching funds, candidates must raise at least $100,000 by collecting $5,000 in 20 different states, in amounts no greater than $250 from any individual.

Tancredo raised about $176,000 through 3,082 contributions from 25 states.

So far, only Tancredo and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., have qualified for and decided to take the matching funds, the FEC said. Most of the top-tier candidates have opted out of the system because it requires them to spend less than about $50 million.

But the news isn't all good for Tancredo. The Republican congressman has repeatedly called for the U.S. to deport all illegal immigrants, which it turns out, would be pretty expensive. The department of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement estimates that it would cost $94 billion to deport every illegal immigrant in the U.S.

Uncle Sam thanking you for your contribution to this nutbag
What a complete and total waste of taxpayer money.

My thoughts exactly.

It's the risk we take in a democracy.
Said funds will also go to some very good folk on both sides.

At least TT can't raise enough to qualify for much.

they should have at least a chance
if they are going to waste taxpayer money.

"Having a chance" should never be criteria
That's part of the public funding purpose,to give those who don't have a chance, a chance.

We could say the same for Richardson, Kucinich, Ron Paul, etc. But their presence and contributions to the greater process are too valuable to not support.

Don't agree
let their supporters pay for it then.  I know they add something to the process but it shouldn't be on the governments dime.

I get your point,
but did you even check the box on your tax return to fund the campaign matching fund?  Even if you did, wow, your contib was a whopping 3 bucks.

Public financing of campaigns is one of the very few things we get to "choose" whether or not to fund.  If you dont like the Tank and other 3rd tier candidates getting your hard earned tax dollars, dont check that box when you do your taxes.

[ Parent ]
I don't check them
I don't check any of them because it says doing so will not have any impact on the outcome of my return.

Actually "having a chance" does become a factor at some point
Back when the primary process was more prolonged, if a candidate consistently got below a certain percentage of the vote in each primary, he or she would be at risk of losing matching funds.  With the new compressed calendar, I'm not sure that has any relevancy.

[ Parent ]
Aren't we experiencing....
...a prolonged calendar and not compressed?  The new season started the day after Election Day, 2006.

the CAMPAIGNING is prolonged
But the actual voting has been compressed from running between Feb. and June, to running between Jan. 19th and Feb. 5th.

[ Parent ]
I see.
Once upon a time there were no primaries.

The parties met the proverbial smoke filled rooms. They wheeled and dealed, and set up their nominee.  Usually that man wasn't even in the city.  Send him a telegram.

Then folks took it relatively easy until after Labor Day when the real campaigning took off.

Imagine that, two months of campaigning.  For the 2008 cycle, it will be essentially 23 months.

The Republic moved on, it had presidents both good and bad.

Frankly, I think that was a better system.  It has become too, literally, democratic. The fear of the fore fathers fulfilled.  (Good alliteration, huh?)

That's good to know.
When do we get to meet the good ones?

/snark/

I was thinking the same as I wrote that! :)

$94 B deportation. What a crock.
Read the details.  Put every illegal in jail for a month? And why in jail for a month?  Why not a day?  Or a year?  Or tell them to get the hell out of here, if you don't check in at the border within seven days on the way out there will be prison time the next time you are caught?

What planet are these guys from?  We already know from the way back experience of Operation Wetback, and the more recent experiences of tighter laws here in CO and in OK that many choose to self-deport if there is any heat on. If it ain't easy, most don't want to be here.

A hand ringing fait accompli attitude.

They took the average time for processing... That's where the one month figure came in. However, they did not include the cost of finding all of them or court costs.

They also didn't calculate the cost to farmers and other businesses when there is a labor shortage. This is a complicated issue and that is only one part of the equation.

[ Parent ]
when conservatives talk about "waste, fraud and abuse" of tax dollars, this must be what they mean

WTF does matching funds....
have to do with illegal immigration?

If it would cost us $94B to get rid of all our illegals, I'd say we should write that check tonight.  It's cheaper than a year's worth of pointless war in Iraq, and the payout on our investment will be less than one year.

Of course, the country clubs will have to pay living wages to their grounds crews (they are virtually all Spanish-speakers), but if the working poor can afford to shop at Wal-Mart again, and Local 7 has some actual bargaining power in negotiations with the grocery store chains (which are offering subsistence wages now, because they can), I'm all for it.

The progressive case for removing illegals is stronger than the conservative case.  But Parsing is right: if you make it financially unprofitable for them to stay, they will leave of their own accord.

The only tragedy is that the charge to end illegal immigration is being led by a xenophobic buffoon.

Sorry...
...meant to put that in the open forum.  Most puzzling.

(Slaps forehead)
Of course, that's it, it has to do with TT and his favorite (only?) topic.
