Paccione Announces Campaign Team

by: Colorado Pols

Wed Jul 18, 2007 at 09:39:24 AM MDT

According to a press release:

Angie Paccione’s 2008 congressional campaign has begun to take shape with the announcement that three key consulting firms have signed on.  Welchert & Britz, Inc will be the campaign’s general management consultants.  The Feldman Group has been hired for polling, research and strategy and Karen Petel of The Mack Crounse Group has agreed to craft the candidate’s direct mail.

Paccione seems to be doing a better job of organizing her campaign team this time around. Her 2006 campaign, led by Gary Chandler, didn't have the kind of experience that Paccione probably needed.

Colorado Pols :: Paccione Announces Campaign Team
Angie Paccione’s 2008 congressional campaign has begun to take shape with the announcement that three key consulting firms have signed on.  Welchert & Britz, Inc will be the campaign’s general management consultants.  The Feldman Group has been hired for polling, research and strategy and Karen Petel of The Mack Crounse Group has agreed to craft the candidate’s direct mail.

Angie Paccione declared these selections as, “my victory team.”  “In 2008 it’s not about running, it’s about winning and these people know how to win!”

Steve Welchert and John Britz have had a successful Colorado based consulting firm since 1989.  They have worked for hundreds of candidates including Mike Feeley, Tom Strickland, Governor Roy Romer, Denver Mayor Federico Pena, Congressman Mark Udall and most recently Congressman Ed Perlmutter.  In addition to passing Amendment 37 for renewable energy, they also have substantial local connections having passed elections for school districts in Greeley, Lamar, Ault and Eaton as well as the Weld County Library District and the City of Evans among others.

Diane Feldman and The Feldman Group is a national political polling and strategic research firm.  Their work in Colorado includes polling for Congresswoman Diana DeGette, and helping to map a strategy to defeat Amendment 31 to preserve local control and parental choice in bilingual education.  Feldman also polled and conducted focus groups for the Kerry-Edwards campaign in Colorado in 2004.  In the 2006 election cycle, The Feldman Group helped elect four new Members of the House of Representatives and a new U.S. Senator and Governor in Ohio.  The company previously polled for Senator Paul Wellstone and also worked with Emily’s List in their efforts on behalf of Minnesota’s new Democratic Senator, and with the DSCC to help elect new Democratic Senators in Maryland, Montana and Rhode Island.

Karen Petel and the Mack-Crounse Group is credited with helping spearhead numerous Democratic congressional victories in 2006.  They were responsible for 40% of the Democratic pick-ups in 2006 and 60% of the National Journal’s top 20 House races including Heath Shuler in North Carolina, Jason Altmire in Pennsylvania and Harry Mitchell in Arizona.  In Colorado, they worked for the defeat of Amendment 39, helped elect Congressman Ed Perlmutter, and mobilized Members for the IAFF (Firefighters) and Colorado Communities for Quality Education.  Petel was formerly the Deputy National Political Director at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and counts Emily’s List among her current clients.

I thought Welchert was working for Udall?
Did he get fired from that race and glom-on to Paccione instead?

Didn't Welchert try to run some type of pro-choice initiative or referendum last year before Governor Owens had an opportunity to sign a similar bill into law?

That's the kind of "professional team" I'd want working for me if I was running for Congress...

solid team
Welchert and the rest of the Paccione team are top notch.

In the last two years Welchert/Britz have handily defeated RBI and the Kenney Group.  Welchert did a brilliant job in the Conrad vs. Buchanan School Board race despite being outspent by over five to one. In CD 7 Welchert made both Peggy Lamm and Rick O'Donnell look ridiculous.

I hear Chandler is still Agnie's day to day guy. Is that true?

defeated?
Do not all of those firms support Democratic candidates and policy? Seems like the same team to me Ic.

Making O'Donnell look ridiculous didn't take that much effort. He painted his own picutre.

Chandler is soooo gone
I was told by a AP volunteer that Chandler is out of the picture.  It was about time.  Chandler was harmful to everyone.

[ Parent ]
she needs help
Angie is a little too rough around the edges and needs all the help she can get.

Welchert is great
Look at the job Welchert did for Jill Conrad.

Welchert is great and will take care of Angie's rough edges quickly.

Is Chandler still around Angie's campaign?

[ Parent ]
Rough Edges?
I know Angie isn't the perfect candidate, but boy, that's not how I would describe her problem. She's one of the most charming, likeable people I've ever met in politics. Her problem is that she doesn't quite fit the district well enough to win. You've got to thread the needle and THEN get lucky too to win that seat as a Dem. Maybe this team can damage Musgrave enough to pull it off (and if anyone can, it's them).

[ Parent ]
Nonsense.
Angie Paccione is as earnest and likeable a person as you'll ever meet.  She's a good public speaker and is adept at speaking to friendly and unfriendly audiences.  I've seen her bravely walk into houses with only registered Republicans and have them putting up her yard sign with smiles on minutes later.  I've seen that several times, in fact.  That's not "rough around the edges," that's a politician skilled enough to focus on common ground and put people at ease.

I think she fell just short in 2006 because the campaign didn't do a great job of selling her as a person (her life story is a wonderful all-American tale), didn't respond quickly and forcefully to Musgrave's attacks, and specifically had a slipshod volunteer operation in both Larimer and Weld counties.  All three items have been addressed specifically by her new organization.

The campaign was arguably rough around the edges, but the candidate wasn't, and isn't.

... for the oft promised explination of her personal finances.

Welchert will solve all those problems
Welchert is a pro. The team he has hired are pros.

I do hear that Chandler is still running the campaign on a daily basis. Is that true?

[ Parent ]
I just hope she gets some breathing room...
to present herself, her story, and her stance on the issues before she starts receiving the grenades from Musty.

And, WHEN she starts getting those grenades she needs a "rapid response" team to fire back quickly.

No Chandler is not involved any more.
Welchert may do well here in shaping a different message. Everyone agrees that she needs to do something different or there will be the same result (although having no third party will help too).

But, anyone who says that Gary Chandler does not have expirience is an IDIOT and obviously knows nothing about the man. He ran Bill Clinton's Governor races and was one of the top dogs in the presidential races. He has run numerous congressional races.

Say what you want, but expirience was not the problem. It was a bad combo of getting defined by Musgrave, having crappy 527s on the dem side, and a third party that sucked a decent number of votes. Also, anyone who has looked at the numbers know that CD 4 may just never be a dem seat.

[ Parent ]
What have you been smoking?
Gary Chandler ran nothing for Bill
Clinton in Arkansas or anywhere else and at most was a low level hired hand in 1992. The only campaign I know that he worked on was Mike Miles for US Senate in 2004.
Welchert is a real pro who will hopefully turn things around for Angie.
Is it true that he is really gone from Angie's campaign or is he still hanging on?

[ Parent ]
No point in responding to people who don't know anything!
Let's say it again. Even though you don't listen. I don't know why I even try.

Gary is not involved anymore.

Gary has more than 30 years political expirence, including with Clinton at a high level.

[ Parent ]
Re 3rd party
The 3rd party helped her.  EE pulled voted from MM not from AP.

If you look at internal numbers she actually did worse than Matsunaka in 2004.

I have not written off the CD4 but if we don't win in 2008 we'll have to wait until after the 2012 redistricting.

[ Parent ]
Steve?
You surely are talking up the firm (specifically Steve Welchert) more than the candidate. You either are Steve or work for Steve. No one citizen has that much respect for a firm, unless money is involved. It's almost sickening.

Lay off a bit.

[ Parent ]
or a candidate Welchert helped...
Jill, is that you?

[ Parent ]
Winners
Brad Buchanan had a huge war chest and Jill Conrad beat him for the School Board. Welchert was one of the keys to Jill's win.

RBI had Peggy Lamm and Perlmutter beat her by nearly twenty points again with Welchert's help.

Welchert has defeated all of the top consultants around even when he has been outspent.

Gary Chandler did not run or even have a high level position in any Clinton campaign. Good move by Angie to dump him.I think that he is from the south and that is why most of the consultants he hired last time were southerners. Has anyone ever seen worse TV commercials than those aired by Angie. Except maybe Brad
Buchanan's.

[ Parent ]
don't know much
and don't want to change the subject, but...

if I remember correctly, Buchanan was an architect backed by big Republican money. His TV spot sucked, as well.

Jill Conrad had the teacher's union endorse her and was a education policy guru.

Welchert had to work real hard on that one, didn't he?

[ Parent ]
Brad had everyone
Brad Buchanan had a majority of the City Council, all Democrats, the first lady of Denver and tacitly her husband, Michael
Bennett and every other establishment figure in town Democrat or Republican.  Brad had five times as much money as Jill and still lost.

[ Parent ]
goes to show you what the teacher's union can do...

;)

[ Parent ]
Great hire of Diane Feldman and The Feldman Group
They are a great polling firm.  The work they do in Colorado is significant.  They understand Colorado and Colorado voters.  Good job getting them Angie.

Mangie
Mangie will need nothing short of a miracle to beat Marilyn.  The new and improved Marilyn is a much different and better candidate than she was in 06'...and dare I say she is new and improved.

Just keep repeating it,
that's what they pay you for.
