Open Line Friday!

“We’re going to have a socialist, almost a totalitarian existence, and that’s where this comparison to Reagan starts to anger me a little bit. Reagan was not about any of this.”

  1. This is a very good thing…our suspicion was that the commission had heard new information from industry and pushback from Frackenloopers’ office. They were getting ready to cave to the governors’ friends in the industry and withdraw the changes they had tentatively approved. This gives us a chance to counter the industry and the governors’ people who want to maintain the status quo.

Vote on new Colorado drilling rules delayed

    By The AP
    Thursday, January 24, 2013

DENVER — Colorado regulators are delaying a vote on new rules that would require bigger buffer zones around oil and gas wells.

The proposal isn’t satisfying many in the state’s populated Front Range or in some rural counties. The proposal calls for placing wells at least 500 feet from buildings. Some environmental groups want 1,000-foot buffers. Others worry that requiring even 500 feet will slow an industry that supports rural economies and the state’s budget.

The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission was scheduled to vote Thursday on the rules but is pushing that back to allow for more public comments.

The rules under consideration by the commission also would make the state the only one to require sampling of water wells near drilling sites both before and after drilling.

    1. Update on the above post…

I am informed that those who had re-engaged the COGCC and subsequently forced this delay were local govt. interests and, while I believe them to be friends of the industry, they were apparently not industry representatives themselves.

I think it is fair to clarify that.

      1. The rub that required the reopening of this rulemaking was in the rule that allowed a local govt. rep…the LGD or Local Government Designee or an O&G Liason…to establish the need for a hearing. The Commission was giving away a power that, by statute, belongs to them. The Colorado Supreme Court will most certainly object.

I want to see the Commission remove the “offramps” that allow the industry to escape the rules…kind of like when a drunk driver takes a side street when he/she sees a checkpoint up ahead.. these rules are riddled with escape clauses.

These rules are so cleverly subverted you have to give the industry lawyers and tacticians a nod for their creativity. The setback rule is so complicated and convoluted with so many side doors, as to be completely impotent. The water testing rule is equally useless. How about a clear-cut, uniform setback to start with…and then restrict the offramps..?

In fact…This whole procedure is a joke. Public health is not a subject that is being considered by the commission in these hearings. It is specified in the “Statement of Mission and Purpose” that testimony about public health impacts were not going to be relevant to this rule making. That directive came from the governors’ office, as I understand it.

This is your baby, Governor, and you are failing the people of Colorado because you refuse to see the truth your constituents can clearly discern. The rules are not fair and need to be effectively changed.

If you do not establish a significant setback and if you allow the industry to keep skirting the rules, your legacy isn’t going to be what you imagine. One of your staffers needs to step up and tell the boss he is snowblind and needs to look away from the bright light….unless he is happy with the name “John Hickenlooper, the Man Who Destroyed Colorados’ Water”.

Has a ring to it, huh?

        1. “One of your staffers needs to step up and tell the boss he is snowblind and needs to look away from the bright light…”

Does he have any staffers who are able to speak truth to power? Or are they all blinded by the light?

  2. Ronald Reagan, with his unilateral, ill advised, secret, costly and damaging actions in Iran and Nicaragua, and the stupid Star Wars weapon system that never worked but sapped the American taxpayer, was closer to a totalitarian than anyone before or since in American history.

Rachel Maddow, in her excellent book Drift, spells it out.

  3. We’ll have a major update on the state of our technical upgrade later today. Thanks for your patience, everyone, and good things are right around the corner.

      1. Thanks. Do you see those options below comments, or just in that display?

And yes, we are still working on both on the site itself, and our documentary post on the upgrade status. We keep getting waylaid by news to write about, and experimenting with plugins in a safe way (without taking the site down) is laborious.

But good things are on the horizon, we promise…

  4. Rush outdid himself again…

I mean, here we have by reputation, the smartest woman in the world. This is how Hillary was presented to us during the nineties after she had, you know, eaten the excrement sandwich of marrying Clinton and putting up with everything Clinton put her through, it was time for her to be rewarded. A presidential run in 2008. Then the black came along and it screwed everything up and everybody went for the black guy and they threw Hillary overboard.

  5. Meet the Abortion Providers Risking Their Lives for Your Right to Choose

    http://jezebel.com/5977545/meet-the-abortion-providers-risking-their-lives-for-your-right-to-choose

C’mon Pols, where’s the tutorial? I don’t have enough time in my busy life to take an html tutorial. Bold? Blockquotes?

Dr. Curtis Boyd, has been administering abortions since the pre-Roe ’60s and describes himself as a “very active” speaker who travels around the country advocating for the cause. He’s commonly advertised as a “special guest,” because the FBI fears for his safety and doesn’t want too many people to know his whereabouts.

“I’ve become accustomed to it,” Boyd told me. “This is the life I have chosen. I want to make a political difference, so I’m willing to take the risk that comes with speaking out.”

    1. They promise they’re working on tech stuff that will make us all happy.

In the meantime anyone who’s interested can go to our Big City paper’s site and read about how a Catholic hospital is defending itself against a wrongful death suit involving fetuses by saying … well, they were fetuses. Hadn’t been born so not persons with rights.

Since no personhood amendments or legislation has passed they have every right to defend themselves in that way, of course. Probably not something they wanted right out there in public, though.

Apparently, long story short, the doctor on supposed 24 hour call couldn’t be found for a seven months pregnant woman and it didn’t turn out well.

  6. There’s so much empty space in the new format. It feels like driving through the desert, with a whole lot of sand and only an occasional cactus to look at. It’s sad.

John Boehner: Ending Abortion Is ‘One Of Our Most Fundamental Goals This Year’

Gee, wasn’t it just a few months ago that we Dems were accused of unfairly raising the possibility that if the GOP won control of the Senate (much less the Presidency) that abortion would be one of their top agenda items?

I certainly do recall that discussion in 2010 with Ken Buck’s campaign.

Wishing Boehner all the luck, just as he had with his other Fundamental goal — insuring Obama was a one-term president.

    1. Wishing Boehner all the luck, just as he had with his other Fundamental goal — insuring Obama was a one-term president

      Aha!
You haven’t been keeping up. In keeping with the reinvention of the GOTP the new main goal is Obama only be a two term president.

    1. dwyer…the Republican party is in complete disarray…leaderless (unless you consider “Rinse” Priebus a leader). Their sound machine is in the toilet, swirling in the water and trying desperately to grab onto some message or rhetoric that will save them. Soul searching is a fools’ errand for the soulless.

      It is great theatre.
