You Can Stop Mentioning Caplis

by: Colorado Pols

We've never considered radio talk show host Dan Caplis to be a serious contender for the U.S. Senate, no matter how many media stories continually list his name as a possible candidate. As Colorado Confidential found out, most Republicans don't take a potential candidacy serious, either:

"I don't know any Republicans who are taking that seriously," says Lynne Cottrell, a former Arapahoe County GOP chair and longtime Republican activist who knows Caplis personally. "I don't know anyone who is supporting him. Dan's a good guy, but I don't know where [the media] is getting this idea that he is a potential candidate."

Attorney John Zakhem, a well-known GOP insider, is equally blunt when asked if he knows of any Republicans who are taking Caplis seriously as a candidate.  "Nobody [is talking about him]," he says. "He's not on the radar for me or any other Republicans that I know of."

Adds another Republican insider who wished to remain nameless speaking about the U.S. senate race: "Caplis? No. There isn't anybody who is thinking about Dan Caplis as a potential candidate."

Caplis did not respond to repeated attempts for comment, so it's hard to say whether he is seriously thinking about running for the U.S. senate or if floating his name is just a publicity stunt ("There are a lot of skeptics out there who say he's just trying to promote his radio show," says Zakhem). But if Caplis is serious about running for senate, he'll have a lot of convincing to do.

Caplis could be tough
Caplis has money, a smart, articulate and  well-known wife, a good looking family and fairly high name ID amongst rank and file Republicans and social conservatives. They may well be calling him the nominee in August 2008 even if they are not talking about him now,

huh?
What money? Seriously - does he have an extra couple of million just laying around? Because if he doesn't then he's in trouble. Fundraising is clearly going to be an issue for the guy in the primary

Besides that there is the fact that there however many years worth of recorded statements from the guy. Over the course of many (all?) of those years Caplis has been carrying water for an extremely unpopular President. Do you think there is any chance Bush will be above - 45% by November 2008? How about 40%? So even if Caplis somehow escaped a primary he still has no chance of winning. That radio show is a huge liability.

Well...
If primary candidates were chose by the party leaders, he'd be out. But since it is a direct election by the voters in the party, I'd say he still has a chance if he decides to run. He is a semi-celebrity and I assume has a fair amount of resources. Then again, the GOP is pretty good at shutting out candidates that the big wigs don't support. And if that means more folks like Beauprez, I ain't complaining.

Well, Caplis beats Rayburn and Suthers,
at least according to Mount Virtus' poll.

(Scott McInnis is number two...)

Boy, is there going to be some crying when Bob Schaffer announces he's not running.

"But every Republican in the world is a lobbyist…" -- Bill O'Reilly

Couldn't they squeeze any more ads on that webpage???

[ Parent ]
I'd vote for him...
Just kidding.

But I'd vote for his wife in a heartbeat.

For what?
You have to question her judgement being associated with a right wing blowhard like Caplis...

"I've learned a lot of lessons being involved in politics. I also believe that when you are attacked, you have to deck your opponents." -- Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY)

[ Parent ]
Capliss only accomplishment
is Amy Sporer !

" The webinar is free, however, there are only 250 spaces available "

Some douche

[ Parent ]
Sporer's only problem...
is her association with Dan Caplis...

"I've learned a lot of lessons being involved in politics. I also believe that when you are attacked, you have to deck your opponents." -- Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY)

a loss for Bob Schaffer
Caplis and Tancredo running against Schaffer for the GOP Senate nod would have been a blessing for Condom Bob since those two would have made Schaffer look pretty reasonable!

He's out
Caplis isn't going to make a serious run.  It's all publicity.

Of course he's not running!
If Bob Schaffer, fellow devout Catholic and passionate conservative, should have bowed out maybe Dan would have run.  But with Scottie M. stepping down and Bob Schaffer waiting for the elephant-print red carpet to be rolled out, Caplis knows any good Republican will take a knee when Schaffer takes his strides.

By the way, Bob Schaffer is running for Senate in Colorado.

Yippee!

Just wondering
Why Schaffer as opposed to Suthers?  Could you support either?

[ Parent ]
Public eye
First off I disagree with almost every stance Caplis has made on his "Talk show" but I do have a question. Do any of you know of a candidate with such a high amount of public comment being elected to a State or Federal Office? I would think a talk show host would be at a huge disadvantage even with the free air time since a large part of their job is to be controversial and semi entertaining (if you like repetitive arrogance. I would think a serious opponent could skewer him on any subject by simply pulling the sound bites. I guess he would appeal to the ultra conservative Catholics but that doesn't seem like much of a base.

Some have come close
Such as the Dem nominee for WA CD 8, but none as of yet have been elected.  Keep an eye on the Minnesota Senate seat though, if there was a state that would elect a talk show host, it would be Minnesota.

[ Parent ]
Maybe
Are his shows archived somewhere? If not, then you would only be able to stick something on him if someone recorded it or if it got printed in another media format for whatever reason.

[ Parent ]
I'm sure
His shows are recorded.  Talk show hosts pod cast their shows, have transcripts online...all it would take was a membership.

I don't think a talk show host could get elected this cycle in CO, but in a state that elected a former wrestler, I wouldn't put it past them.

Anything can happen in politics, you just have to live in the right state.

[ Parent ]
Yep...
At Colorado Media Matters, audio and written transcript of the parts that an informed electorate would want to really know about, to complement the KHOW archive. Here's more Caplis than you probably can handle:

[ Parent ]
Worse than a voting record.
Exactly.  For the last several years Caplis' job has been to be argumentative to boost rating.  No doubt those hours and hours of tape will make wonderful fodder for attack ads.

It takes more than a pretty face.

[ Parent ]
Yeah but it's such a pretty face....
Amy's I mean. Have I mentioned how hot she is?

I'm saying HAWT!

[ Parent ]
Calm down, now, BCGD
The obsession's starting to get a bit creepy.
