McInnis Tells Allard to Run Again

by: Colorado Pols

Wed Nov 29, 2006 at 14:45:18 PM MST

And if you take that at face value, we've got a bridge to sell you. As the Grand Junction Sentinel reports:

One potential Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2008 wants the incumbent, Republican Wayne Allard, to bid for a third term.

Scott McInnis, who retired from the House in 2004 after six terms, is among the Republicans listed as possible contenders for the post should Allard decide against running.

"I hope Allard runs again," McInnis said, "His seniority is critical."

McInnis played down his own interest in returning to Washington, D.C., saying that his interest in returning to public service "remains high, but just how that shakes out, I don't know."

Allard, who said in 1996 that he would serve two terms in the Senate, is expected to decide in the spring whether to run again.

Along with McInnis, Gov. Bill Owens, Rep. Tom Tancredo and another former representative, Bob Schaffer, are interested in the post should Allard retire.

It's not much of a secret that Allard is leaning toward retirement anyway. What Scott McInnis is clearly hoping for is that Sentinel readers haven't heard so, and that he'll look like the magnanimous big man once it's official.

It's actually a smart play if you think about it.

Allard's basically retired anyway.
I don't see why our #1 do-nothing Senator, Wayne "Dead Horse" Allard, can't have his cake and eat it too.  Six more years of sitting on his ass, sponsoring no legislation, and issuing press releases about better handling of stray animals...it's better than Social Security.

I say Allard's in again.

Very smart play...
gets him in the headlines along with the tag that he has been mentioned as a possible Republican nominee (to lose to Udall in the general) if Allard retires.

"I've learned a lot of lessons being involved in politics. I also believe that when you are attacked, you have to deck your opponents." -- Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY)

What was the result of the FEC complaints
about McInnis paying his wife $40,000 in salary for a year after the campaign had ended?  I know the State Dem Party filed a complaint, but didn't hear the conclusion.

It seemed like this was a major factor that kept him from running for Governor.  Would it cause him problems in a Senate bid?

Sentinel
Much ado about nothing,,,who reads the Grand Junction Sentinel anyway?

On a serious note, I agree--this puts McInnis in the same sentence as Allard, which is a good thing (for him).  He's old news though, except maybe on the western slope.  Udall is fresh, in the news, and has plum assignments he can say he's doing good stuff for us.

I think the GOP would be stupid not to nominate Owens--he's run statewide, has good approval ratings (why I don't know), and is slick.  I wonder how much dough he has in the bank still versus McInnis' million bux.

Ruthie?
On a serious note, I dont know if I agree that McInnis saying that he thinks Allard should re-run is such a good thing. Didnt he used to represent the western slope? I am sure that he has a decent amount of name ID, and the fact that he lost (stepped down?) is not such a great thing  when seeking higher office (yes, there are exceptions). If he is trying to play the reluctant card (as in, well...if you really want me to run....) I dont think it will play. Especially if Allard decides to step down and endorses someone else. In other words, why is this such a great thing for him to do?

doesn't matter
whatever money Owens may have in his guberenatorial campaign account could not be used in a federal race.

For a Senate campaign, he would have to start from scratch.

Yep
Scott wasn't shy about breaking his own self-imposed term limit pledge.  Why shouldn't he try to talk the potted plant into breaking HIS?

Today, you're either going to get better or you're going to get worse, but you're never going to be the same.  Which one will it be?  --Joseph V. Paterno

skeletons?
Colorado Pols reported early on in the Governor's race that McInnis had some "pretty scary skeletons in his closet," but after McInnis bowed out, it never came up again.

"Welcome to Colorful McInnisado"

Did you hear?  There is a move affot to rename Mesa as "McInnis" County?  (GarCo Larry is pissed, since Scooter use to be a cop in Glenwood, and he was rumored to be thinking of renaming the hot springs "Stinkin' Springs" in the ex-Congressman's honor).

McMenace abandoned the 3rd CD
McMenance abandoned the 3rd CD, deciding he needed to earn some more $$, stepping down to take a job as Lawyer-Lobbyist
(http://www.coloradoc...).

Here's some info from the Political Graveyard http://politicalgrav...

Anyhow, the 3rd CD would have been a safe seat as long as McMenace occupied it, having acheived near demi-god status when they named a vast section of public lands after him (the McInnis Canyons NCA)...

But, money called and duty well... it could wait, so off he went to earn some cash shilling for whomever needed a bit of help talking with his former colleagues...

Meanwhile, the Colorado GOP, (in 2004) convinced of their invulnerability allowed a bloody primary to put forth Greg Walcher, much reviled on the Western Slope (outside of Moffat County), the worse of a set of candidates ranging from mildly disappointing to baggage-ladden governor's lackey, who was resoundly beaten by John Salazar's the 3rd CD's current Rep.  This time, Salalar won by some amazing margin, more than Tancredo or StillBorn won by it their Districts...

Thanks Scooter!  Hope that lucrative K Street lifestyle is trreating you well!  We sure are glad to have Rep. Salazar in office instead of you!
