Legislative Races Fundraising

by: Colorado Pols

Wed Jul 05, 2006 at 23:00:00 PM MDT

Now that we're getting down to the nitty gritty in the campaigns for 2006, we'll start tracking the money for some of the top legislative races. You can click below for the full list, but there are a few numbers that really jump out:

  1. Betty Boyd and Matt Knoedler are both raising a lot of money in SD-21, which should be the top Senate race.

  2.
  3. Democrat Moe Keller has a 5-to-1 money lead over Republican Dick Sargent in SD-20.

  4.
  5. Republican Kiki Traylor is raising significantly more money than her two Republican opponents in SD-22.

  6.
  7. Democrat Gail Schwartz has nearly $90,000 cash on hand, NINE times more than Republican Lew Entz in SD-5.

  8.
  9. Democrat Lois Tochtrop has almost four times the cash on hand as fellow Dem Val Vigil in SD-24.

  10.
  11. Republican Dave Lewis has $33.70 cash on hand in SD-32. Yes, you read that right. Lewis has no shot at winning that seat, so this isn't a big deal, but it's still funny to see a report like that.

Elsewhere, take these numbers with a grain of salt, because outside committees will pump a LOT of money into these races. Outside committees will spend significantly more money in these races than any of the candidates will raise themselves:

  1. Neither Republican in HD-23 is raising much money for the right to take on incumbent Democrat Gwyn Green.

  2.
  3. Republican Affie Ellis outraising incumbent Democrat Debbie Benefield.

  4.
  5. Republican Dave Owen not raising as much money as you might think for somebody who has been in the legislature for the last, oh, 75 years. Democrat Jim Riesberg has a healthy lead right now.

Ellis has more cash
Ellis has more cash on hand but has not raised more money than Benefield.  You may want to fix that.

Hey - Kiki is gettin
Hey - Kiki is getting in some big lobby donors - including some that she carried legislation for.

I am not sure how well money from Mike Feeley will sit in a conservative district with a conservative opponent.

I hear Snakehead is involved in this one.

Andy Kerr -- raising
Andy Kerr -- raising a lot and spending even more.  This is his first campaign and he needs stop spending until September . . . will Lois let him?  Good thing his opponent seems clueless.

Republican primary in HD 23 -- whoever wins will have plenty of $ pumped into their veins in August.  Grandma Gwyn Green is gonna have the toughest fight in the state.

Debbie Benefield -- let's see?? A 20 year record of supporting Jeffco public schools vs. a DC Lobbyist who wants to allow handguns in classrooms.  It will be a close race, but I see the veteran coming out on top by, ohh, 1500 votes.

Boyd vs. Knoedler -- Since neither candidate can afford much TV time, this one will be won in the trenches.  Boyd is walking and dialing.  I don't see any ground effort on his part.  Matt has a new baby and an unused real estate license.  Did he cash in all his favors in 2004?  Where are his German-youth shock troops?

Keller vs Sargent -- yawn..

R primary in SD 22 -- this is one to watch . . . I'll pick Traylor by fewer than 300 votes.

You have the numbers
You have the numbers for Andy Kerr in HD 26 way wrong.

Citizens for Andy Kerr has 18,345.81 cash on hand.

Their fundraising was way above what you are reporting as well.

You got the number right on the Republican. He is in the negatives.

Kiki will get beat.
Kiki will get beat. She is pro-abortion, anti gun and pro business tax and regulation.  Not good in an area that reveres Tancredo.  And Bill Schroeder is her campaign mgr.

Benefield will get beat.  Her support by Jeffco schools which has bought and paid for her, will be the decider in that one.  School support is NOT an asset in Jeffco at the moment.  Especially with the release of the Columbine diaries.

Plus, her hubby, fresh off a loss from Congrove in the commish race, is now on the school board.

Knoedler wins, even with the public schools taxpayer money (teacher's union dues) funding Boyd's campaign.

I'm thinking the GOP upset will be Holloway defeating Green.

Kiki is raising a lo
Kiki is raising a lot of money.  I hope voters are informed enough to know she isn't a conservative like she says but rather a moderate democrat.  I never thought I would say this but I would rather have Norma Anderson back in the seat.  Sam Adams has it right, she is pro C and D, pro abortion, pro smoking ban, pro seat belt law, anti voucher and if she had it her way I think underage drinking would be a felony.  All in all, she is a nannyist to the max!  I guess she must think that since she is a pediatrician she knows what is better for our families than we do.

However, even though she is raising a lot of money I think Mike Kopp will be hard to beat in this district.  Kopp is a former Army Airborne Ranger who served in the first gulf war (and he has plenty of metals to go along with it), was a hot shot firefighter, worked for the border patrol for two years, works to help churches and non-profits around the country and since he has been in Colorado he has been very involved in campaigns and Republican causes.

Needless to say, Mike Kopp has one hell of a resume and I think that will bode well for him.  Personally I can't think of a better resume to have if your going to run for office in a district where republicans outnumber dems 2-1 and Tom Tancredo is your congressman.
