Worst Week in Colorado #2

by: Colorado Pols

Fri Aug 13, 2010 at 12:56:56 PM MDT

Okay Polsters, it's time for your nominations for the "Worst Political Week in Colorado."

The last time we ran this post, two weeks ago, Republican Party Chair Dick Wadhams was declared the winner (or loser).

We'll put a couple of the more obvious selections up for a vote (including Wadhams, the current "champion"), but please chime in with your suggestions. And try to make them creative -- sure, it was a bad week for Andrew Romanoff and Jane Norton, but who else???

Our selection for this week's "Worst Week in Colorado" is Josh Penry, campaign manager for Norton's failed U.S. Senate bid. Not only did his candidate lose (despite being the clear favorite for a long time), but the surprising victory of Dan Maes in the GOP Gubernatorial Primary makes it unlikely that Republicans will be replacing their candidate for Governor with someone else (which, potentially, could have opened the door for Penry to take over as the GOP nominee).

On to your suggestions!

Gotta be Romanoff
Last I heard, Penry, McInnis, Ament, Norton and Wadhams at least had roofs over their heads.

"Why not do the right thing for the American people, even though it's not exactly what we want." - Speaker Boehner

Agreed.
I really feel badly for him, even though I voted against him. I hope he's OK and in talks to get a fantastic new job.

We'll miss you, Gabby.

[ Parent ]
Doesn't he have another house?

[ Parent ]
He was speaker of the house
but he can't live there.

[ Parent ]
Let's not cry too much over Romanoff's house
If you can sell your house at a huge loss, which Romanoff did, that means you can afford to sell your house at a huge loss. He may or may not fit your definition of "wealthy," but Romanoff has plenty of money.

[ Parent ]
The reason I voted Romanoff . . .
was that he burned a lot of bridges and a lot of his goodwill with a lot of people.  Not necessarily the strongest activists, but people who were motivated by President Obama and tend to be more moderate--the so-called "Conserva-Dems."  They are people who didn't know who he was or what he had done (and he did nothing to illuminate them, but that's a different story) and his ads and overall tone turned many people off.

Discipline without purpose is tyranny.

[ Parent ]
Your first sentence contains approximately zero logic...
Perhaps Andrew felt in his own mind he had no other choice BUT to sell his house at a loss, in order to continue funding his Chidren's Crusade. (Plenty of Americans over the past 2 years have sold their homes at losses that can ill afford.)

As for your 2nd sentence, I suppose that depends on what Pols' definition is of 'plenty of money'. Care to enlighten your audience on this subject?

Pols can't seem to let your antipathy for Andrew Romanoff just drop. What, really, IS your issue with the guy?

[ Parent ]
He obviously had a choice.
Nobody forced him to sell his house.  It's not like it was a matter of life or limb.  It was merely a political campaign.

[ Parent ]
And it got him a day and a half of free media
Which was precisely the purpose.

Today, you're either going to get better or you're going to get worse, but you're never going to be the same.  Which one will it be?  --Joseph V. Paterno

[ Parent ]
Agree it's Romanoff, but . . .
the GOP can't be too happy, either . . .

Discipline without purpose is tyranny.

Scott "If Only Rolly Had Footnoted" McInnis
hands down. Everyone else on your list can run again sometime, if they want to, but McInnis saw his political career finally evaporate this week. He was humiliated by Don Mares, er, Dan Mayes, er -- that what's-his-name guy.

I'm with you
I think everyone else recovers if they work it right. Scott is done.

Support people, not parties. Support ideas, not ideologies.

[ Parent ]
Agreed - Nail in the coffin lid for Scottie - thank goodness, it's way past time!

Scooter is done on a statewide basis,
But if he should run in two years for the state legislature in Mesa County, he would be heads and shoulders above the available elected ``talent.''

Scooter is far better than the incoming HD54 rep, Ray Scott, and the current and future HD55 rep, Laura Bradford.

Seriously, it's what term limits has done. We've gone to the lowest common denominator. And then there's Steve King...

Sometimes, I guess, you have to let the inner bitch out.

[ Parent ]
it would be back to his more humble beginnings wouldn't it?
but of course he'd had to give up the lobbying work.....  :(

I'm going w/ Wadhams.
The way the gubernatorial race went down in the primary, the open lack of backing from the Party for Maes since his win, losing the seat in 2006 to Ritter, trying to clear the field for Norton, being unable to rein in Tancredo--the list of missteps from this guy just goes on and on.

I think Wadhams might be the one in real trouble after November 2. I cannot see how the Republican Party can justify keeping him as Chair. What a shame, too, because he's the gift that keeps on giving to Democrats.

You're sure...
he'll last 'til November?

[ Parent ]
Yeah, if only because
the Party can't afford one more day of bad press. If they dump him, I think they'll wait until his term is up and throw their weight behind someone new.

I have a question for you and others--who do you think they will recommend to replace him as Chair? I don't know the Republican Party's people very well so I don't even have a half assed guess on this one.

[ Parent ]
Penry?
Being that Josh Penry gave up his position as Senate Majority Leader to run for Governor, then gave up his run for Gov. to work for Norton (perhaps with hopes of becoming Chief of Staff for either Norton or McInnis), he has a lot of time on his hands.

Although what does it say about his ability to recruit candidates when all the ones he supported couldn't make it past the primary?

[ Parent ]
His name came to my mind, too
but then I kind of was thinking along your lines--he doesn't exactly struck me as competent and I think he severely mismanaged Norton's campaign.

But then again, neither is Wadhams and look how far he's run with it.

[ Parent ]
And he would have won a three-way primary.
Meaning no Tancredo.

Josh definitely had a bad week.

Today, you're either going to get better or you're going to get worse, but you're never going to be the same.  Which one will it be?  --Joseph V. Paterno

[ Parent ]
No, I don't think Penry
Josh has pretty much exposed his incompetence as Senate Minority Leader and as Nortons' campaign jock.

I think a moderate. Someone like Russell George.

[ Parent ]
You Won't
Even know his name.  Did you ever hear of Maes or Buck before this year.  Their next chair will be an unknown to the vast majority of the public hero to the tea partiers.

[ Parent ]
Yes, I knew who Buck was.
Quite familiar with him since 2006 actually.

[ Parent ]
It's got to be an operator
not a current politician (i.e., Rove wasn't an elected.), someone behind the scenes. In fact, wasn't one of the problems with Wadhams that he liked seeing his name above the nominee when the credits rolled. Too much out front.  I don't know any of the Repub functionaries. The Dem ones, either, for that matter.

[ Parent ]
I'm w/ you on this one, MOR.
He has screwed up everything he has touched in Colorado. He needs to go live in a place where mediocrity is mistaken for excellence.

I know...the Sharron Angle campaign could use his special touch. He was helping Lowden...why not the candidate that beat her? Vegas is just the place for Mr. Wadhams.

His life has been a living hell with this primary, and this past week had to be the worst so far.

Hey, no trash talking the Dickster!
Wadhams is the best thing we Dems have going in this state.

Honk hello when you see my license plate!

Even more so
Joe Trippi, since he was still, publicly at least, aboard Team Romanoff.

But it's not like churning out the one-size-fits-all angry populism for Andrew was anything but a paycheck for Trippi, and he's got plenty more of those in the pipeline, so maybe it wasn't such a bad week for him after all.

[ Parent ]
I had to delete my comment
because I was just typing pretty much a duplicate of yours.

Penry, definitely
Romanoff is still looked upon favorably in his party, he'll be just fine. Penry has made himself the laughingstock of the Republican Party.

Worse for Josh.

Lori and Scott saw this coming.  (Yes, they did.)  Josh, and the other-hand, was likely blindsided by the loss.

I wonder if he's trying to over-throw Wadhams?  That vacancy committee can still meet, after all...

Seriously doubt 'Lori and Scott' (what a nice preppy sounding couple!) saw this coming
prior to, say, 10 days ago.

Which still qualifies Scottie for the mantle of biggest election week loser.

Has to Be Wadhams Again
He called these folks "nuts" and now he has to defend them.  You know Wadhams always gets nasty and loud when he has to defend something that's indefensible.  He did it with Tancredo.  He'll do it again.  His problem is that he tried again to play kingmaker and he lost.  Eat it Dick.
