Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet (D) appeared in the AM760 progressive dojo this morning, and answered questions on everything from health care to the Afghanistan War to the controversial allegations made against him on Wall Street reform in this morning’s Denver Post. You can listen to the interview here (it starts about 26 minutes in).
Three bits of news from him:
– Bennet not only reiterated his support for health care reform and the public option, he predicted it will pass as part of the final bill.
– In response to today’s Denver Post story, Bennet insisted he supports Democrat Senator Chris Dodd’s tough Wall Street reform bill. However, he also said he will probably vote to re-appoint Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, despite Bernanke’s involvement in the Wall Street meltdown.
– He said he’s withholding judgment on President Obama’s plan for an Afghan War escalation until the president outlines it fully next week. In response to a question about whether he would support House Democrats new war surtax proposal to pay for the escalation, he did not commit to the specific proposal, but did say he’s committed to trying to find a way to make sure any escalation is deficit neutral.

I think you are warming up to the guy.
I am a little unsure of his position on financial regulation.
If we can’t get control of wall street now, what do you think will happen when we move back to the prosperous part of the cycle?
If you get a chance, please comment on my piece called “Colorado’s Deja Vu”. I would appreciate your take on it. Happy Thanksgiving!
…and that’s about as close as a precedent that we’ll get for Afghanistan.
Didn’t stop Jefferson from invading Tripoli, and he’s about as close to a deity that Constitutionalists have.
It’s Bush/Cheney neglect taht has allowed Al Queda to prosper. Why did bush/cheney send 12k troops to Afghanistan to cat bin laden and 150k troops to go after Saddam?
He’s much better at than I am.
That’s obvious.
I was hoping you would follow up on the cram down question that you mentioned before.
I don’t know how much advance notice you get, but here’s an idea.
Give him the questions in advance. Yes, it is valid to just ask away and have him answer on the spot. But sometimes we can get better answers if he’s prepared to answer. Example- your question about some kind of tax to pay for escalating in Afghanistan. Bennet is a guy I would expect to be thoughtful but also practical about how to support the president’s agenda and be deficit neutral or better.
If I understand Obey’s plan- basically an income tax surcharge for everyone, raising everyone’s top rate. The WSJ says this combined with health care and expiration of the Bush tax cuts would push the top rate over 50%. I’m not sure that’s right- but if is, that seems like a great oppo point for the mid-terms and 12.
