Friday Jams Fest

by: Middle of the Road

Fri Nov 20, 2009 at 10:52:05 AM MST

(Please don't make a habit of the "nothing to do with Colorado politics" posts, but popular demand is popular demand - promoted by Colorado Pols)

What does a Friday's Jam Fest have to do with Colorado politics? Absolutely nothing, baby, that's what.

Except that music is an expression shared by folks of all races, religions, creeds...and political affiliations. So quit arguing and start posting some tunes. All Russian videos must be saved for Sunday, homeys.

Here's a little Marvin Gaye from the Montreux Jazz Festival, 1980 to get things started.

Let's try this here, where it belongs.

I was just listening to this over in Open Thread
and hoping you'd post it over here, Ralphie. Love it!

"What or who do you serve? MOTR?" Sharon Hanson

[ Parent ]
Love this version and Dylan's take on it.

"Don't go all "Ralphie" on me now: Just let it go." - Steve Harvey

Oh man, I used to be the biggest Muddy Waters fan
back in college. Great pick.

"What or who do you serve? MOTR?" Sharon Hanson

[ Parent ]
I'm still a huge Muddy fan
Thank God Johnny Winter brought him out of retirement and recorded him again before he died.  Those are my favorite Muddy albums.

[ Parent ]
Great vocals...
Muddy appreciated.

[ Parent ]
Not necessarily "Jam Fest" music, but brilliant nonetheless.
Cross posted from the Friday Open Thread.

Brilliant indeed, girl. Wow.
That's the whole point of Jam Fest--anything goes here (except David's Russian videos.) :)

"What or who do you serve? MOTR?" Sharon Hanson

[ Parent ]
I was gonna post this next week
But why wait?

Oh my.
Indeed. Why wait? This is too good to wait another 7 days. Weird, too, because I almost posted a Thelonious Monk tune instead of Marvin.

"What or who do you serve? MOTR?" Sharon Hanson

[ Parent ]
Awesome organ-based trio!
Do you like Jimmy McGriff, too?

[ Parent ]
OK, so it's not live
and there's no actual video, but I really like this song. It takes a little while to get started.

I want a nickel every time someone uses the "We are all triguardian" joke, or I start posting more naked pictures of politicians.

Perfect.
My Zeppelin video doesn't actually have a video, either. I kind of prefer that since I'm really just listening to the music anyway.

NGR

"Sen. Inhofe thinks global warming is debunked every time he drinks a Slushie and gets a brain freeze" Jon Stewart

Oooh, I like that, Twitty.
I've never heard of them before.

"What or who do you serve? MOTR?" Sharon Hanson

[ Parent ]
Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Pat Flynn and Johnny Cowan
I use to watch these guys in Kentucky back in the 80s.  Pat Flynn doesn't play much anymore, but the others do in other combinations.

Here is one (NGR) from T-Ride a while back...

One more
Then I got to get to work!

Big thanks for the reminder about the diary, WST.
I owe you one.

"What or who do you serve? MOTR?" Sharon Hanson

[ Parent ]
I'm reminded of things most days
And no owing needed.  Thank you for doing it.  Heck, I'll even take the flogging for it if that is Pols wish. :)

[ Parent ]
Why, what an offer.
I'll personally do the flogging, if it comes to that. :)

"What or who do you serve? MOTR?" Sharon Hanson

[ Parent ]
Ow! You took the words right out of my mouth!
n/t

[ Parent ]
somthing a little different

I love Throwrag.

Rock-n-Roll from the Salton Sea.

In my eyes...
Maybe the most magnificent voice ever recorded.

"Kevin and I will keep them out somehow -- even if we have to redefine what the peer-review literature is!"

Serious question:
Did he pass away? I keep thinking he did. Why do I think that?

"What or who do you serve? MOTR?" Sharon Hanson

[ Parent ]
He died in 2005
of an apparent heart attack.

He had diabetes and hypertension and had a stroke in 2003.

[ Parent ]
He also...
Was the principal backup on a lot of studio records from the 70s before he hit.  Check out Bowie's Young Americans.

Apparently it was Luther's idea to throw the Beatles' lick "I heard the news today oh Boy..." in the tune.

Cool, eh?

"Kevin and I will keep them out somehow -- even if we have to redefine what the peer-review literature is!"

[ Parent ]
Are you making that up?
About the Beatle's song? Or is that for real? Jeez, if that's true, I have a whole new respect for Luther.

"What or who do you serve? MOTR?" Sharon Hanson

[ Parent ]
Nope.
Heard it from an engineer that was there.

Ye of little LB faith! :)

"Kevin and I will keep them out somehow -- even if we have to redefine what the peer-review literature is!"

[ Parent ]
:)
Yeah, sorry for that, whatever was I thinking?

"What or who do you serve? MOTR?" Sharon Hanson

[ Parent ]
Of course we can't forget Del

"Sen. Inhofe thinks global warming is debunked every time he drinks a Slushie and gets a brain freeze" Jon Stewart

Man, I gotta tell ya, I'm really digging the NGR
stuff you posted. I'm big in bluegrass.

I used to date (well, "date" may be the wrong word here but we'll keep it clean for the under 18 crowd) a mandolin player in college. I've never heard of these guys and I'm seriously considering buying a CD of theirs. Any suggestions?

"What or who do you serve? MOTR?" Sharon Hanson

[ Parent ]
Well, they don't play anymore
And I mostly enjoyed them live...let me ask around.

You should also check out Strength in Numbers.

More Del to keep it going.

"Sen. Inhofe thinks global warming is debunked every time he drinks a Slushie and gets a brain freeze" Jon Stewart

[ Parent ]
Cool cover...
I love the Richard Thompson original of "Vincent Black Lightning."

They did a great recording with Steve Earle.

[ Parent ]
When the lights go out

Sum Ergo Cogito.

Sweet.
And I've never heard of them, either.

This is going to turn out to be a great diary series...for me. :)

"What or who do you serve? MOTR?" Sharon Hanson

[ Parent ]
Strength in Numbers
sadly, also not playing together anymore, but amazing stuff.

"Sen. Inhofe thinks global warming is debunked every time he drinks a Slushie and gets a brain freeze" Jon Stewart

[ Parent ]
Oh my God.
They're fantastic. Haunting. I'm gonna root around on Tower Records later tonight and see if I can find either of these groups. Tower carries some pretty obsolete stuff. Quite honestly, I think I like them even better than NGR. They remind me a little of DMB. And again, the only name I know of any of them is Bela Fleck.

Really, thank you for posting this. I think I just found a new favorite today.

"What or who do you serve? MOTR?" Sharon Hanson

[ Parent ]
MOTR
Bela Fleck and Sam Bush were two of the members of NGR, then moved on to their own stuff including Strength in Numbers.  Both were truly amazing in concert--SiN is really a super group, with Mark O'Connor, Jerry Douglas, Bela, Sam and Edger Meyer on bass.

Heard back from a friend on NGR albums...here is his advice:

Hey [Twitty].....I'd say either Commonwealth or Barren County. Fly Thru The Country is amazing, almost "Deadlike" in it's extended jam.....might be too much for a newbie.

"Sen. Inhofe thinks global warming is debunked every time he drinks a Slushie and gets a brain freeze" Jon Stewart

[ Parent ]
Thank you, Twitty.
Honestly, I really appreciate this. Hell, I just sent a link to my sister to turn her on to it. And since I'm a Deadhead, I think I'll give it a shot and see if I can find it on Tower tonight.

"What or who do you serve? MOTR?" Sharon Hanson

[ Parent ]
In that case...

Saw these guys so many times too...

"Sen. Inhofe thinks global warming is debunked every time he drinks a Slushie and gets a brain freeze" Jon Stewart

[ Parent ]
I was at Brent's last show.
I lived in southern Illinois and we went on part of the summer tour. My sister lived in Chicago at the time and wouldn't let us take a shower at her house. That's pretty much all I remember of that entire summer, that my sister was so mean and wouldn't let me enjoy hot water for a change. :)

I do recall that the atmosphere at Tinley Park felt very weird to me. We had just seen them in Deercreek, Indiana and it was truly the best show I ever saw them do. When we saw them at Tinley Park, something just felt off and weirdly enough, we all agreed that Brent was the most "on" of any of them. The rest of the band seemed exhausted. I was brokenhearted when he died. Such a neat spirit.

I wonder if we were at the same show?

"What or who do you serve? MOTR?" Sharon Hanson

[ Parent ]
I never saw them at Tinley or Deercreek
Alpine Valley, Rosemont and somewhere else in Chicago; Rochester NY; Cincinnati, KC, all over the east and southeast, then a bunch out west and points between.

Yeah, something went out of the band once Brent passed.

"Sen. Inhofe thinks global warming is debunked every time he drinks a Slushie and gets a brain freeze" Jon Stewart

[ Parent ]
Tinley Park just sucked. And I mean the venue itself was awful.
I love Alpine Valley. That was my first Dead show.

"What or who do you serve? MOTR?" Sharon Hanson

[ Parent ]
Mine was Charlotte NC, 1984
Bertha opener...

I had a run in....

"Sen. Inhofe thinks global warming is debunked every time he drinks a Slushie and gets a brain freeze" Jon Stewart

[ Parent ]
I want to hear about the run in sometime. :)
Mine was Alpine Valley, WI, July 1989. I think it was 1989--it was the same year that Stevie Vaughn died up there. Bad fog up there. The place gets boxed in. I'm surprised there haven't been more airplane crashes, quite honestly.

"What or who do you serve? MOTR?" Sharon Hanson

[ Parent ]
I was there in 1989
You probably saw me, curly afro, tie dies, dancing like a fool

"Sen. Inhofe thinks global warming is debunked every time he drinks a Slushie and gets a brain freeze" Jon Stewart

[ Parent ]
Probably. God, this is kind of cool, isn't it?
I'd be the long haired blonde running around with a bunch of goofy guys trying to find a dry place to land when the rain came.

"What or who do you serve? MOTR?" Sharon Hanson

[ Parent ]
Yeah, I remember the long-haired blond...
She was to my left and right, just in front and behind me.

Saw Stevie Ray a few times too (but not at Alpine).  Remember the landfill hill with a couple of ski lifts on it?

"Sen. Inhofe thinks global warming is debunked every time he drinks a Slushie and gets a brain freeze" Jon Stewart

[ Parent ]
I do remember that!
I really loved Alpine Valley. A great vibe there and we were allowed to set up camp, too which was great, until the rain came. I remember sitting in a tent with my friend Benny after the show, watching the water rise around our ankles and his socks float by. That sucked.

I saw them something like, oh God, let me try to recall...
three times.

One of those bands I have a love-hate relationship with.

Have you seen the film "Festival Express"? Just checked it out. Great song or two by the Dead 1970; Pigpen less than a year from death, and they sounded -- dare I say it? -- "tight."

[ Parent ]
Dare I say it...
That I cannot recall how many times I saw them, sometimes in the lot but not in the show, sometimes got there late.  Sometimes...it is a bit foggy now.

But I figure about 110 times...some great shows, with Dylan, Santana, Neil Young, all sorts of folks...

But that was during my irresponsible 20s...

Now I am more into bluegrass and acoustic music and I like to remember what I did the night before.

"Sen. Inhofe thinks global warming is debunked every time he drinks a Slushie and gets a brain freeze" Jon Stewart

[ Parent ]
I stopped counting after 50
Partly out of necessity... or inability

I did see several "sets" - 3 nights at this venue, 2 nights at that one etc. But I never followed them.

It blurs, of course, but I have at least one real recording from every era I saw the band.  Those guys toured a LOT.

I have a Phish LEO story too

And they sounded totally awesome

[ Parent ]
Glad you saw that film!
Super performances by the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band. Great moment, as well, is a shaggy Sha Na Na performing to a bunch of long-haired freaks who clearly and gleefully enjoy the nostalgic and campy/cheesy rock 'n' roll infusion; in cue with the music, there are cuts to kids outside the venue tangling with police. Brilliant. (Quite a bit of the performance are on YouTube.)

that I love you?

Good first day, MotR
I'm a little disappointed that nobody front-paged you.

But if you'll keep posting (and post early), I'll continue to contribute.

That sounds to me -- who's never been there -- like the real island music.

I'd heard of Iz, but never watched one of his video clips. Thanks.

OH, I love that, David.
Makes me want to head back to the Big Island. I've been there twice, for five weeks at a time.

I love that guy's voice.

still really love the Basement Tapes

some good live music tonight at chautaqua community house in Boulder
SPRING CREEK
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 8:00 p.m.
$15, ($12 MEMBERS)
Spring Creek are the 2007 Telluride and RockyGrass Festival winners, and are the first band to win both titles in the same summer. Their reputation for excellence made them the most in-demand Colorado bluegrass band last year, earning them spots at more than ten regional festivals. In addition, the band's original crowd favorite "High Up in the Mountains" won the Vox Populi Award for Best Americana Song from the Independent Music Awards.

Good info. Thanks.
