It is vital to find a cash crop that can be reliably grown with dryland farming techniques– and preferably witjout poisoning the soil with millions of tons of pesticides.
How is hemp regarding the need for roundup or other pesticides? I'd love to see the crop of George Washington and Henry Clay save semi-arid Eastern Colorado.
The conservation angle is what got me interested in this crop 17 years ago. It can be grown in dryland and limited-irrigation scenarios; it rarely needs herbicides or pesticides. There is already an $800 million+ market for the products in the US and most of those purchases are imported. We remain the only G7 nation to prohibit its cultivation under federal law (the Controlled Substances Act); it is, though, legal to grow under certain conditions via Section 7606 of the Farm Bill.
Sorry we didn’t pull together a Pols day last year so everyone could see the crop. MamaJ did make it out for a day of harvest and Jared swung by the field one afternoon as well. You’ll enjoy this: one of our fields last year was planted right over the top of the Republican River pipeline bringing the aquifer water from north of Laird and dumping it in to the river at the state line. That made for a story rich in symbolism.
The symbolism is somewhat undercut because the river is named for the Repunlican Sioux, not the Republican Party. But I won't tell if you won't tell.
The symbolism I was eluding to was more a new crop, banned for the past 80 years, that would require significantly less resources. But-not-for federal farm policy as a significant driver in the depletion of the Ogallala we may have had these discussions two-three decades ago (that, and it’s likely the Republican Sioux had no aversion to the cannabis plant!)
You were alluding, alas, it eluded me. But you are right. We're overdrawn and lost a court case showing we owe water to Kansas. So putting a water sparing crop on the pipeline was good symbolism.
