Stapleton Tops Republican Field in New Poll

  • by: Colorado Pols

The Republican-leaning polling outfit Magellan Strategies is out with new numbers in the GOP gubernatorial primary. Unsurprisingly, State Treasurer Walker Stapleton leads the rest of the field by a comfortable margin:

Via Magellan Strategies

These are the first publicly-available polling numbers in the Republican Primary since a University of Colorado poll in late 2017 that showed former candidate Tom Tancredo leading the field with 25% (followed by Stapleton at 8% and Cynthia Coffman at 6%). With Tancredo out of the race, the Magellan poll of likely Republican primary voters shows Stapleton on top in every voter subgroup, with Coffman the only other GOP candidate in double digits.

But the Magellan poll also shows some troubling numbers for Coffman. While Stapleton has a 33/13 approval/disapproval rating among likely Republican primary voters, Coffman is already upside-down at 20/21. The Republican base has never been particularly fond of Coffman; this poll is just more evidence of the uphill battle she faces one day ahead of the party caucuses.

  1. Should be interesting to see how this information hits the Republican caucus sessions tomorrow night.

I've not been paying attention. With all the people submitting petitions, is the Republican party going to have a preference poll and announce results?

  2. They need a hero. Time to fire up the bat(shit) signal . . .

. . . Tom Tancrazy, Independent, for Governor.  Saving the Republican Party (from itself) one more time!

    1. Colorado's xenophobes gave Tancredo 36% of the American Constitutionalist vote in 2010. Hick got ~51%, Maes (R) ~11%. Yes, Tancredo's ego could easily propel him to repeat his performance, even though he can't count on more than 40% of the vote.

And yes, the Republicans would forgive him….again.

  3. The very sad part of this poll is that 47% of those polled (and, presumably representative of the November voter profile) are old farts.

Sad, because we Boomers and oldsters should not have that much influence.

    1. Magellan did a voice recorded survey of households with at least one Republican or unaffiliated voter.

The results were weighted to reflect the voter turnout demographics of past Republican primary elections in Colorado.

So, not exactly representative of Colorado's Boomers and oldsters in general – just those who vote in Republican primaries. Judging by 2016, that is a bunch of crazy people who voted for either Trump, Cruz, or Rick Perry.

If that makes you feel any better, davebarnes, that doesn't include you.

  4. I see Mr. Stapleton is well on his way to wrapping up rural endorsements.

County commissioners representing more than half of Colorado’s counties are endorsing Republican gubernatorial candidate Walker Stapleton, his campaign said Monday.

The two-term state treasurer, one of 10 Republicans running to replace term-limited Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper, unveiled the slate of 57 officials from 33 counties the day before voters are set to attend precinct caucuses.

I'd be interested in knowing his position on the rural hospital fee?

    I'd ask Moddy but…

I'm betting it's antithetical to the best interests of rural residents.  On the other hand, Congressman Polis has done more to advance rural interests in his time in Congress that the entirety of his Republican political opponents combined.

This is the Dump huckistan Paradox
