What you can do to fight back this week (February 5)

  • by: ProgressNow Colorado

This week marks a very important anniversary. The 25th, in fact. In 1993, then-President Bill Clinton signed the Family Medical Leave Act into law. Since then, American workers have used the protections in the FMLA some 200 million times to take time off from work to care for themselves and their family without worrying about losing their jobs.

25 years later, it’s clear there’s still a lot more work to be done.

Everyone agrees that American workers need more than just time off work to survive a medical emergency. Without paid medical leave, most Americans are never more than one serious illness away from bankruptcy, poverty, and even homelessness. In Washington, Trump and the far right are considering a terrible plan to simultaneously deplete Social Security funds and force workers to stay on the job later in life if they get sick, have a baby, or need to care for a loved one. It’s atrocious.

In Colorado, we’ve come up with a better plan. Action item #1 this week: join ProgressNow Colorado, Colorado 9to5, other progressive advocacy groups, and other folks like you on the West Steps of the Colorado Capitol building as we rally and then testify in favor of the Colorado Family Medical Leave Insurance Program (FAMLI). Hear from experts on this important issue as well as real Colorado families who would benefit–and then stick around to testify in favor of paid family medical leave for every working Coloradan.

What: FAMLI Day of Action

Love Knows No Borders, No Walls, No Bans Vigil 2018

For the 9th year in a row, AFSC will deliver handmade valentines to detention center detainees and day laborers. People who could use extra love right now. We consider this a meditation. Make something beautiful for someone separated from loved ones, separated by borders and distance or by walls. We assert that our Love knows No Borders, No Walls.
